Milan Captain Maignan Urges Composure After Defeat to Bologna
AC Milan’s captain Mike Maignan has called for composure following the team’s recent 4-2 defeat to Bologna at San Siro on Wednesday. This loss has positioned Milan seven points behind Serie A leaders Inter and Lazio.
In a post-match press conference, Maignan emphasized the importance of not overreacting to recent performances, stating, “We shouldn’t draw conclusions based on one match or two months.” He acknowledged that the Rossoneri have allowed 11 goals in nine league matches, four of which were conceded against Bologna alone.
“This is a critical moment for the team; it’s our second loss in three matches, and it’s only natural that I come and speak to you,” Maignan remarked when asked about the team’s situation. The goalkeeper highlighted the need for improvement, particularly in defense. “Right now, when we lose the ball, we know we are vulnerable because we leave space for our opponents to counterattack,” he added.
Milan struggled in their previous Europa League match against Bournemouth, where Maignan received a red card, leading to speculation about his accountability. He responded by reaffirming his commitment to the team, saying, “I came for the team; I didn’t particularly want to speak to you today.”
The team’s next challenge comes as they prepare to face city rivals Inter this Saturday. Aware of the pressure, Maignan stated, “We must avoid throwing fuel on the fire by saying that we’re weak or anything like that.” Instead, he encouraged a focus on maintaining a positive mindset, urging players and fans alike to remain calm during this challenging phase.
Milan has recorded five wins, three draws, and one loss in their Serie A campaign thus far, while also experiencing two defeats in their Europa League matches. Maignan’s leadership will be crucial as the club navigates through this rough patch while aiming for a turnaround in their performances.
