Newcastle United Making Progress to Sign Nico Gonzalez from Manchester City

Manchester City showcased their shift in midfield strategy during a recent match against Bournemouth, where Marc Guehi started ahead of Croatian international Nico Gonzalez, resulting in a 2-1 victory. Before the game, City confirmed an agreement with Lille for the transfer of Ayyoub Bouaddi, further indicating changes within their squad. Despite Gonzalez’s willingness to compete for his position, reports suggest that Manchester City is open to selling the Spanish midfielder.

Recent developments indicate that Newcastle United is advancing in their efforts to secure Gonzalez. According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, the two clubs are nearing an agreement, allowing the Spanish midfielder to join Newcastle’s ongoing rebuild. Discussions with Gonzalez are reportedly underway, aiming to finalize the deal early this week.

Nico Gonzalez’s tenure at Manchester City may come to a close after 18 months, having joined from FC Porto in January 2025. During his time, he demonstrated potential, particularly as a defensive midfielder, stepping up when Rodri was unavailable last season. However, with the current configuration and strategy under Enzo Maresca, the club appears to favor other options, leading to the decision to part ways with him.

As Newcastle United intensifies its pursuit of Gonzalez, the recent match where he did not start emphasizes the likelihood of a summer transfer being beneficial for all parties involved.

If there was any further proof needed that Nico Gonzalez is surplus to requirements at Manchester City, it arrived yesterday. Marc Guehi started in midfield ahead of the Croatian international in City’s 2-1 win over Bournemouth. It was also revealed before the match that City had finally reached an agreement with Lille to sign Ayyoub Bouaddi. While Nico Gonzalez is happy to remain at Manchester City and fight for his place, the club are willing to sell the Spanish midfielder. It has now been reported that Newcastle United are edging closer to signing Nico Gonzalez. That looms as the best move for Nico, whose card seems marked at City.

Newcastle United are ‘advancing ‘ in their bid to sign Nico Gonzalez from Manchester City.

Fabrizio Romano reported last night that Newcastle United had made significant progress in their bid to sign Nico Gonzalez from Manchester City. Romano reports that the two clubs have almost agreed on a deal that will see the Spanish midfielder join Newcastle’s rebuild. Furthermore, it is reported that Newcastle are in talks with Nico Gonzalez in a bid to seal the deal early this week.

It does seem harsh the way Nico Gonzalez’s time at City is ending.

Unfortunately, Nico Gonzalez has likely played his final game for Manchester City. He has spent 18 months at the club after signing for City from FC Porto in January 2025. During his time at the club, the Spanish midfielder showed signs that he could play an important role for the FA Cup and Carabao Cup holders. Nico could play as a defensive midfielder and he did step up in Rodri’s absence last season. Looking at Enzo Maresca’s current squad, it did seem like Nico Gonzalez could play that role this season.

But it isn’t to be. For whatever reason, City have decided that it would be better to sell Nico Gonzalez. Perhaps the City hierarchy feel that the Spanish midfielder is a good midfielder, but not capable of reaching the level they desire. Perhaps Nico Gonzalez’ isn’t suited to playing in an Enzo Maresca side. Whatever their reasoning is, City seem poised to sell Nico to Newcastle.

Newcastle United are eager to sign Nico Gonzalez from Manchester City. After seeing Marc Guehi start ahead of fhe Spanish midfielder yesterday, a summer transfer may be exactly what Nico Gonzalez needs.
