Manchester City’s Bid for Hermann Malonga Falls Through

    • Man City’s deal to sign Paris Saint-Germain centre-back Hermann Malonga has now collapsed

    • The deal had appeared to be agreed last month, with a five-year contract understood to be in place

    • The collapse represents a blow to Man City’s defensive reinforcement plans this summer

Manchester City’s move to sign Paris Saint-Germain centre-back Hermann Malonga has collapsed, ending what had appeared to be a done deal after the 18-year-old’s agreement to join the club was first reported last month, as per a new report.

Malonga had been widely reported as set to join Manchester City on a five-year contract after Le Parisien’s Benjamin Quarez revealed the French teenager’s decision to leave Paris Saint-Germain and buy into the development pathway at the Etihad Stadium in June, with the 18-year-old understood to have rejected a contract renewal from PSG in favour of a move to the Premier League.

City had scouted Malonga on several occasions and regarded him as a player of “very high potential,” with the plan understood to have been to integrate him into the squad initially before considering a strategic loan move to allow him to continue his development at the highest level.

The collapse arrives as Manchester City continue to assess multiple areas of the squad ahead of Enzo Maresca‘s first competitive season in charge, with director of football Hugo Viana having overseen a summer of considerable activity that has already produced the £116 million signing of Elliot Anderson as its headline addition.

The defensive position had been earmarked as an area in need of further depth following a period of significant transition at the back, with the Malonga move representing an investment in the longer-term pipeline rather than an immediate first-team solution – making its collapse a setback in terms of planning rather than a crisis for the upcoming campaign.

Romano: Malonga deal “has now collapsed”

According to Fabrizio Romano, the deal to bring Malonga to Manchester City has now collapsed – a concise but definitive verdict from one of the most well-connected journalists in world football, leaving no room for ambiguity about the current state of a move that had appeared to be all but concluded.

No specific reason for the breakdown has been offered at this stage, though collapsed deals at the stage this one had reached typically involve a change in personal preference from the player, a deterioration in the relationship between the clubs involved, or a third party entering the situation with a more attractive proposition.

Malonga’s decision earlier this summer to reject PSG’s renewal offer in favour of City had suggested a clear and settled preference from the teenager’s camp – making the sudden collapse of the agreement a significant development that raises fresh questions about where his immediate future now lies.

What does the Malonga collapse mean for Man City’s defensive rebuild?

The setback places renewed pressure on Viana to identify alternative options in the centre-back position, with Josko Gvardiol’s new contract providing a foundation of stability at the top of the defensive hierarchy even as questions about the depth behind him remain to be addressed.

City had framed the Malonga signing as an investment in the academy pipeline rather than the senior squad, but the collapse nonetheless leaves a gap in a defensive recruitment plan that Viana had been building carefully across the summer, with the teenager’s “very high potential” profile not easily replicated in a market where quality young centre-backs are among the most coveted and difficult players to secure.

The development is also a reminder of the unpredictability that characterises even the most advanced transfer negotiations, with the Malonga collapse arriving just weeks after CEO Ferran Soriano’s personal intervention was required to salvage the Anderson deal at its most precarious moment – a summer that has tested City’s recruitment operation at every stage.

Whether Viana moves quickly to identify a replacement target in the same profile, or whether the summer’s defensive business is considered sufficiently complete without Malonga, will become clearer as City’s pre-season preparations continue and the window enters its final phase ahead of the new season.
