England faced heartbreak in Atlanta after a dramatic semifinal against Argentina ended in a 2-1 defeat. The match saw England dominating for 84 minutes, having taken a lead when Anthony Gordon scored from Morgan Rogers’ setup in the 55th minute. Manager Thomas Tuchel’s tactics appeared to stifle the reigning world champions, leading to frustration on the Argentine side.

However, in a twist of fate, Lionel Messi showcased his brilliance. In the 85th minute, he assisted Enzo Fernandez, who scored a stunning equalizer from distance. Just as England seemed poised for extra time, Messi’s slick pass found substitute Lautaro Martinez in the 93rd minute, allowing him to score the decisive goal. Consequently, Argentina advances to meet Spain in the finals, while England returns home to reflect on a missed opportunity.

    Argentina Player Ratings Against England

The Argentine goalkeeper had a relatively quiet match but effectively commanded his penalty area. Gordon’s goal caught him off guard, as England failed to consistently challenge him.

The night was less favorable for Argentina’s right-back, who lost track of Gordon during England’s goal and was substituted after 71 minutes.

A Tottenham defender faced challenges in containing the English offense but used his physicality to manage Harry Kane effectively, receiving a yellow card in the process.

The Manchester United player struggled against England’s intensity and was taken off late in the match after receiving a yellow card in the first half.

    Nicolás Tagliafico (DF) – 5/10

A key error contributed to the setup for England’s goal, and he offered little attacking threat, leading to his substitution later on.

Playing unexpectedly on the wing, he worked hard but struggled to deliver effective crosses and was caught offside during a promising attack.

He struggled defensively during the chaotic first half and was replaced after an hour due to his inability to contain Jude Bellingham.

The Liverpool midfielder played a crucial role in the midfield battle, helping Argentina maintain possession as England looked to defend their lead.

    Enzo Fernandez (MF) – 8/10

He avoided an early booking for a foul but made a remarkable impact with a stunning equalizer from 25 yards.

    Lionel Messi (FW) – 8.5/10

Though quiet for most of the match, Messi demonstrated his unparalleled talent with two crucial contributions that turned the game in Argentina’s favor.

Despite efforts from England’s defense to contain him, Messi’s relentless pressing and vision proved decisive in the end.

    Argentina Substitutes

    Nicolas Gonzalez (MF) – 6.5/10

Coming on in the 63rd minute, he helped stretch the game, putting pressure on England’s defense.

He brought stability to Argentina’s right side after replacing Molina.

His late-game energy became essential as Argentina pushed for a comeback, earning a tactical yellow card to disrupt an England counter-attack.

    Nicolas Otamendi (DF) – 6/10

Upon replacing Lisandro Martinez, he effectively calmed the back line during a tense finish to the match.

    Lautaro Martinez (FW) – 8/10

The super sub played a pivotal role, scoring the winner just minutes after coming on, showing poise in finishing Messi’s assist.
