He netted 79 goals for Barcelona and 12 for Argentina – in a total of 69 games for club and country.
It was enough to earn Messi a then-unprecedented fourth consecutive Ballon d’Or – even though he only won the Copa del Rey in 2012 for all those goals.

He ended up on 474 goals, far clear of Ronaldo’s 311 for Real Madrid.

The almost unthinkable happened in August 2021 as Messi left Barcelona on a free transfer.

An emotional Messi fell to the ground as the full-time whistle blew and was thrown in the air by his team-mates as they celebrated.
He won his second Copa America three years later.
