Lionel Messi Announces Retirement from International Football

Argentina legend Lionel Messi has confirmed his retirement from international football, stating it was a heart-wrenching decision but acknowledging “the time has come.”

At 39 years old, Messi led Argentina to victory in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, cementing his legacy as the nation’s all-time leading scorer with 125 goals in 207 appearances, making him their most-capped player.

In a heartfelt message shared on Instagram, Messi expressed that he has given everything to the national team but feels he has “nothing left to give.” He remarked, “Time is running short, chapters come to a close, and this is one that hurts me deeply.”

He continued, “I love, have loved, and will always love being part of the national team. I’ve given it my all, I have nothing left to give, and besides, there are some really great young players coming through behind me who deserve their chance.”

Previously in August, Messi indicated he was contemplating his future in football following the death of his father, Jorge, who passed away at 68 after a prolonged illness.

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner revealed he penned his retirement message on July 21, just two days after Argentina’s defeat to Spain in this summer’s World Cup final.

Messi, who currently plays for Inter Miami, concluded, “Today, after what happened with my dad, I’m even more convinced than before.”
