Moratti Reflects on Mourinho’s Move to Real Madrid
Jose Mourinho’s recent return to Real Madrid has prompted discussions about his storied career, especially his initial departure for the Spanish club over a decade ago. Massimo Moratti, who served as Inter Milan president during that pivotal time, shared his insights on Mourinho’s departure in a recent interview.
Moratti addressed Mourinho’s exit after the 2009-10 season, expressing no bitterness towards Real Madrid for acquiring the manager. “His dream was to have an adventure with Real Madrid. And so it was,” he noted, asserting that the move was one that Mourinho had long desired. Moratti emphasized that his relationship with the Spanish club remained positive, even as they approached him for Mourinho.
“Exceptional, always. No problems. The relationship we had was healthy, pleasant. Yes, even when they signed Mourinho. I’m a calm person who loves football in all its aspects,” Moratti stated. He acknowledged the unpredictable nature of football, saying, “He wanted to leave and he did. He’s the same Mou.”
In further commentary, Moratti reflected on whether time has changed Mourinho’s character. He stated, “I respect Mourinho. I know his character, and that’s difficult to change. His obstinacy for victory is always recognizable. Great personality, determination.” He recognized that although Mourinho remains constant, the football landscape has evolved significantly.
Moratti noted, “Football has changed; it’s becoming increasingly complex. Full of new developments, modern ideas… You have to adapt, but Mou is the same.” He highlighted the growing challenges in managing players today, where commitment and a sense of belonging to clubs seem diminished. “Mourinho is one of the best prepared to manage a group magnificently, to instill a winning mentality in them,” he added.
He concluded by praising Mourinho’s work at Real Madrid, echoing sentiments from former players like Toni Kroos regarding the coach’s effectiveness this season. “I have no doubt. I insist on this because I know him. He’s the best coach I ever had at Inter. I’m very close to him. What he did here in two years was the best,” he affirmed.
