Luka Modric Commits to AC Milan, Reflects on Last Season’s Challenges

Luka Modric has revealed insights into his decision to sign a new contract with AC Milan, emphasizing that he never genuinely considered leaving the club, despite the difficulties experienced during last season’s collapse.

In an interview with Milan TV, the Croatian midfielder discussed the impact of an injury sustained against Juventus that overshadowed the latter part of the season. “I never thought it would be my last game with Milan. Deep down, I knew I wanted to continue, but at the same time, I had to check other things that would allow me to do so. Now I’m here and I’m very happy to be back,” said Modric.

Milan’s disappointing home defeat to Cagliari concluded their title pursuit in a frustrating manner. Modric noted that it took his participation in a World Cup campaign with Croatia to fully process the setback. However, his decision to extend his contract stemmed from the club’s commitment over the summer to build a robust team, particularly under the leadership of Ruben Amorim. The club made significant investments, including agreements totaling around €150 million, contingent upon Diego Moreira’s transfer from Strasbourg, which further encouraged Modric to stay. “Milan showed how much they cared about me and the fact that I was part of this new project: it was what I needed, what I wanted to hear. I talked to my family about it and decided to stay,” he reflected.

When asked about comparing AC Milan to his former team, Real Madrid, Modric expressed a strong sentiment. “I played for the biggest club in the world, Real Madrid, but I feel like Milan is at the same level. Those who talk about Milan do so differently than other clubs. And when you come here, you understand why: it’s one of the top clubs in the world, the people who work there make it great, the fans.”

Modric concluded by addressing the Rossoneri supporters, expressing gratitude for their backing since his arrival. “What I ask of the fans is to stay with us and support our project. I can promise that we will truly give everything our fans deserve: we hope they are proud of us. We need them to have a great season.”

Luka Modric has opened up on his decision to sign a new contract with Milan, insisting he never seriously considered walking away despite the pain of last season’s collapse.

Speaking to Milan TV, via MilanNews, the Croatian addressed the injury suffered against Juventus that clouded the closing months of the campaign: “I never thought it would be my last game with Milan. Deep down, I knew I wanted to continue, but at the same time, I had to check other things that would allow me to do so. Now I’m here and I’m very happy to be back.”

Modric: Milan are ‘at the same level’ as Real Madrid

Milan’s home defeat to Cagliari ended their title challenge on a painful note, and Modric admitted it took a World Cup campaign with Croatia to fully process it.

However, it was the club’s show of faith over the summer, as they built around Ruben Amorim and added significant fire-power, including deals worth around €150m once Diego Moreira’s move from Strasbourg is finalised, that convinced him to extend: “Milan showed how much they cared about me and the fact that I was part of this new project: it was what I needed, what I wanted to hear. I talked to my family about it and decided to stay.”

Asked to compare his new club to his old one, Modric didn’t hold back: “I played for the biggest club in the world, Real Madrid, but I feel like Milan is at the same level. Those who talk about Milan do so differently than other clubs. And when you come here, you understand why: it’s one of the top clubs in the world, the people who work there make it great, the fans.”

He closed with a direct message to the Rossoneri support: “I want to thank everyone for their support since I arrived. What I ask of the fans is to stay with us and support our project. I can promise that we will truly give everything our fans deserve: we hope they are proud of us. We need them to have a great season.”
