Jose Mourinho Evaluates Real Madrid Squad as Preseason Progresses
It has been nearly two weeks since Jose Mourinho returned to train the available players at Real Madrid. The Merengues began their preseason on 13th July, and over the last few days, have also been joined by two players who participated in the World Cup, namely Arda Guler and Federico Valverde. The rest of the World Cup players are expected to return to the club in the coming few days.
Meanwhile, the new coach has had sufficient time to assess the players training under him, and he has already made decisions regarding the futures of some individuals. For instance, he has given the green light for the departure of the young forward Franco Mastantuono on loan.

Another player whose future Mourinho has clarified is center-back Raul Asencio. According to SPORT, the Spaniard is not part of the Portuguese coach’s plans, and the manager has already communicated this to him.
The Merengues are prepared to part ways with Asencio either on loan or through a permanent sale. The defender’s market value has dropped from €40 million to €20 million in the past year, with clubs like Galatasaray and Lazio reportedly interested in him.
Nevertheless, a major obstacle to his departure could be his high wages. Last summer, his wages increased significantly, reaching €8 million, including salary and bonuses.
Raul Asencio has a contract with Real Madrid until 2031, meaning he will ultimately decide whether to leave or stay. Previously, he expressed a desire to impress Jose Mourinho in the preseason, but he also recognizes that playing time in the center-back position will be limited next season, with five players competing for two spots, while the potential signing of another defender remains a possibility.
