Newcastle United Pursues Borussia Dortmund’s Felix Nmecha

Sky Germany reports that Newcastle United has initiated contact with the representatives of Felix Nmecha as they prepare to enhance their pursuit of the Borussia Dortmund midfielder. The Premier League club intends to submit an offer for the 25-year-old following Bruno Guimarães’ transfer to Arsenal. Newcastle has also accumulated significant funds from the departures of Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali.

However, this initial contact with Nmecha’s camp does not indicate an agreement or confirmation of the player’s desire to leave Dortmund. According to Sport Bild, Nmecha is not actively seeking a move to St James’ Park, and Dortmund is determined to keep him. The German club would reportedly only consider serious negotiations for offers between €100m and €120m.

Newcastle Revives Long-standing Interest in Nmecha

Newcastle identified Nmecha as their preferred potential Guimarães replacement earlier this week, although their interest in the midfielder extends back to before his move to Dortmund.

The Magpies contemplated signing Nmecha prior to his transfer from Wolfsburg in the summer of 2023. The Hamburg-born midfielder chose to join Dortmund, who invested around €30m to strengthen their squad after Jude Bellingham’s departure to Real Madrid.

Nmecha’s initial season at the Westfalenstadion was marred by injuries, which hindered him from finding rhythm and showcasing why Dortmund committed a substantial fee. However, under Niko Kovac, Nmecha transformed into a crucial member of the midfield, offering physical strength, resilience against pressure, and the ability to convert regained possession into counterattacks.

Nmecha’s Value at Dortmund Has Grown

Inter Milan and Manchester United expressed interest last summer, when Dortmund was reportedly looking for around €60m. This already marked double the amount BVB had spent on him from Wolfsburg. Nmecha’s significance has only increased since then.

The midfielder has become a pivotal figure in Dortmund’s successful campaign, reestablishing himself with the German national team and emerging as one of the country’s standout performers during a disappointing World Cup.

Dortmund rewarded his progress by extending his contract to 2030 in March, which includes an €80m release clause that will become active next summer and drop to €70m in 2028.

During the current transfer window, neither clause can be utilized, prompting Newcastle to negotiate directly with Dortmund and present an offer well above Nmecha’s future exit clause.

Dortmund’s Midfield Built Around Nmecha

Should they sell for €100m or more, Dortmund would secure a significant profit, enabling further squad enhancements. However, the timing of such a move poses challenges.

Kovac has tailored his midfield around Nmecha’s attributes, including his ability to traverse the field, elude pressure, and link defensive transitions with offensive plays. Finding an adequate replacement just before the Bundesliga season begins would prove far more complex than merely reinvesting the fee.

Additionally, Nmecha’s current stance creates another hurdle. While a return to the Premier League might be a long-term goal, he does not seem inclined to force a move this summer.

Sporting director Nils-Ole Book recently left only the narrowest opening for an exceptional offer.

“I would consider that [a transfer] highly unlikely,” Book stated. “Of course, there can theoretically always be astronomical sums, but in Felix’s case, I can pretty safely rule it out this summer.”

Newcastle has the financial capacity to challenge that position. However, it remains uncertain if they will be willing to meet Dortmund’s €100m-to-€120m expectations and whether Nmecha can be persuaded to make a move.
