Norway face illness outbreak ahead of World Cup quarter-final against England
Norway are dealing with an unwanted setback ahead of their World Cup quarter-final against England.
According to The Standard, several players have contracted a sickness bug ahead of Saturday’s anticipated match in Miami.
Despite the illness spreading through the squad recently, head coach Stale Solbakken believes the situation is improving as his team prepares for their last-eight clash with England.
Reports from Norway indicate that several players have experienced flu-like symptoms since the tournament began.
Striker Jorgen Strand Larsen missed Norway’s opening match after falling ill, while defender Marcus Holmgren Pedersen was unavailable for the team’s surprise round-of-16 victory over Brazil for the same reason.
Solbakken also appeared unwell during media duties over the past couple of days, though he has dismissed concerns that the issue is serious.
He admitted the timing is far from ideal but noted that the squad is coping well with the situation.
“We’ve had a few players who haven’t been feeling well, but things are getting better,” he said. “It’s not ideal during a tournament, but we’re managing the situation.”
The Norwegian coach believes the demanding schedule and travel between host cities may have contributed to the players’ illness.
However, that has not stopped Norway from delivering impressive performances at the World Cup.
Led by Erling Braut Haaland, Norway have advanced to the World Cup quarter-final after defeating Brazil to extend their historic campaign.
The Manchester City striker scored two goals against Brazil, bringing his tournament tally to seven and placing him in contention for the Golden Boot alongside Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe, who have eight each.
England also face selection challenges heading into the match.
Thomas Tuchel’s side earned their place in the last eight after a nerve-racking 3-2 win over Mexico, though they lost defender Jarell Quansah to suspension following his red card.
The Three Lions will also play without experienced midfielder Jordan Henderson, who has a broken wrist, although Reece James could be available after shaking off a hamstring problem.
