Gotham FC Claims NWSL Shield as Seattle Reign Secures Playoff Spot on Decision Day
The 2026 NWSL regular season concluded with a thrilling Decision Day that saw significant changes in the standings. Gotham FC achieved its first NWSL Shield following a 2-0 victory over the Utah Royals, while the Seattle Reign clinched a playoff spot with a narrow 1-0 win against the Orlando Pride.
Both the Shield and the final playoff spot hinged on the outcomes of the last day of the regular season, with Gotham vying to surpass the second-place San Diego Wave and the Reign aiming to secure a postseason return. The league entered the final matches with seven of the eight playoff positions already determined, leaving fans eager for the unfolding drama.

Gotham quickly took control of its match against the Utah Royals, scoring in the ninth minute thanks to Guro Reiten. Jaedyn Shaw cemented their triumph with a second goal in the 80th minute.
This victory marks a significant achievement for Gotham, adding its first NWSL Shield to a collection that includes two championships from the past three seasons. The team finished the season with 61 points, boasting an impressive record of 18 wins, 7 draws, and 5 losses.
In the middle of the standings, the battle for the eighth and final playoff spot came down to three teams: the Reign, North Carolina Courage, and Denver Summit. With the Courage and Summit squaring off in their final match, Seattle needed a victory to extend its season.

Despite controlling play, the Reign were unable to score until the 68th minute, when defender Jordyn Bugg delivered a stunning strike that beat Pride goalkeeper Cosette Morché. The Reign celebrated, aware that this goal might secure their postseason hopes.
Sunday was particularly meaningful for Seattle, as it marked the final home match for club legend Jess Fishlock, who plans to retire after the season. Notably, the eighth-seeded Reign will not host a home playoff game.
Shortly after the Reign’s victory, North Carolina finally broke the deadlock against Denver with an own goal from Kaleigh Kurtz. However, this development came too late for the Courage, who finish just outside the playoff picture. North Carolina forward Ashley Sanchez, the 2026 Golden Boot winner who tied the single-season NWSL record with 20 goals, faced an unexpected end to her stellar campaign.

The remaining matches on the schedule also held significant implications, with the Washington Spirit and Kansas City Current securing important wins to earn home-field advantage in the quarterfinals.
