Nico O’Reilly Wins PFA Men’s Young Player of the Year Award

Manchester City full-back Nico O’Reilly has been recognized as a “shining example” after winning the PFA Men’s Young Player of the Year award on Tuesday.

The 21-year-old player delivered a standout performance by scoring two goals in last season’s Carabao Cup final, contributing to his team’s victory. In addition to his club achievements, O’Reilly played a crucial role in helping England secure third place in the World Cup, further showcasing his talent on the international stage.

This accolade, received at Manchester’s Opera House, marks a remarkable trend for Manchester City’s academy, with five of the past six recipients of the award coming from the club’s ranks. O’Reilly follows in the footsteps of Phil Foden (two-time winner), Cole Palmer, and Morgan Rogers.

Thomas Krucken, Manchester City’s academy director, expressed pride in O’Reilly’s accomplishment, stating, “Seeing Nico win the award was an incredibly proud moment for everyone connected to our academy.”

Krucken emphasized the collective effort behind O’Reilly’s journey, mentioning the dedication of the academy staff and coaches who guided him from the Under-9s to senior football. “Nico is an inspiration to everyone at the academy. He is a shining example of how to approach the world of football and be successful. We are all really proud of him and want to send our best wishes to him and his family,” he added.

Krucken also noted the significance of having five of the last six winners of the PFA Young Player of the Year award emerge from their academy, calling it an extraordinary achievement.

O’Reilly claimed the award over fellow nominees, including team-mate Rayan Cherki, Manchester United’s Kobbie Mainoo, Bournemouth’s Junior Kroupi, Liverpool’s Rio Ngumoha, and Arsenal’s Max Dowman.
