Headline: Chelsea’s Cole Palmer Faces Scrutiny After Controversial Referee Decisions Against Tottenham
In the aftermath of Chelsea’s recent 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, the Premier League Key Match Incidents (KMI) Panel concluded that Cole Palmer should have received a straight red card for violent conduct. Referee Chris Kavanagh issued a yellow card to the England international in the 70th minute after he collided violently with Spurs midfielder Mateus Fernandes, causing the Portuguese player’s head to snap back.
The KMI Panel voted 3-2 in favor of the view that Kavanagh should have sent Palmer off during the match. Despite this, the panel unanimously agreed with VAR official John Brooks’s choice to not intervene in the situation. A majority of the panel deemed Palmer’s actions as having “clear contact to the head” and needing to be called a foul for excessive force and danger, while two members argued the tackle was aggressive but did not warrant a red card.
Palmer did receive a second yellow card in the 80th minute for another foul, this time on Jan Paul van Hecke. The KMI Panel supported the referee on this incident with a 4-1 vote. As a result of the dismissal, Palmer will serve a one-match suspension and will miss the Carabao Cup match against Liverpool.
Had Palmer been sent off for violent conduct, he would have also been unavailable for Chelsea’s upcoming game against Manchester United, in which he scored a penalty in a recent victory, and the match against Sunderland this weekend.
Additionally, the KMI Panel voted 3-2 that Dominic Solanke of Bournemouth should have been awarded a penalty for a foul by Chelsea’s Moises Caicedo during the 85th minute. However, the panel also voted 3-2 against VAR intervention in that situation. The majority opinion was that Caicedo was “persistently holding Solanke” and affected his ability to advance with the ball.
