Pape Gueye Challenges Senegal Manager’s Substitution Decision After World Cup Defeat
After being substituted in the 66th minute, Senegalese midfielder Pape Gueye has raised questions regarding the rationale behind his exit during the team’s recent loss to Belgium in the round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup.
Sengal manager Pape Thiaw defended his decision, stating that the substitutions were made at the request of players who were fatigued. However, Gueye provided a different perspective, claiming he was not experiencing any physical issues at the time of his substitution, though he acknowledged the manager’s authority to make such decisions.
“I was physically fine; ultimately, it’s the manager who makes the decisions… It’s a matter of respect,” Gueye remarked, emphasizing his support for Thiaw’s choices despite his own views on the matter.
In a further development, Gueye announced his intention to withdraw from international football. Through a post on his Instagram account, he cited his disagreements with the management team as a key factor following Senegal’s exit from the tournament.
