Senegal Manager Addresses Player Fatigue After World Cup Exit
The Teranga Lions’ World Cup journey, held across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, ended in disappointment as they were eliminated by Belgium in a dramatic match that saw them squander a 2–0 lead, ultimately losing 3–2. This unexpected turnaround has drawn criticism towards manager Pape Thiaw’s tactical decisions.
Following the defeat, Thiaw defended his choices, stating that some substitutions were made at the request of players who were struggling with fatigue. “The substitutions? Some of them were mainly requests from players who couldn’t go on any longer. They were tired,” he explained.
Thiaw acknowledged the frustration surrounding the outcome but urged that the focus should not solely be on tactical decisions. He emphasized that the loss was more a result of physical fitness than strategy, noting, “Once you lose after leading 2–0, people are bound to talk about the substitutes, but we shouldn’t focus on that.”
