Lancashire Bowled Out for 180 as Worcestershire Trail by 168 Runs at New Road

Worcestershire capitalized on favorable bowling conditions at New Road, dismissing Lancashire for 180 runs in the second day of their Rothesay County Championship match.

Despite losing the first day to rain, the home team’s bowlers excelled, with Beyers Swanepoel taking 4 wickets for 37 runs and Fateh Singh claiming 3 for 27. Former Lancashire captain Keaton Jennings contributed a solid 55 runs, while tailender Tom Bailey added 34 to the total, as the last two wickets for Lancashire added 65 valuable runs.

As play closed due to bad light, Worcestershire ended their innings at 12 runs for the loss of 1 wicket, still needing 168 runs with nine wickets remaining.

Invited to bat first on a cloudy morning, Lancashire faced an immediate challenge as Matty Hurst was caught at backward point off Tom Taylor’s delivery. Quick wickets followed, with Matthew Waite and Swanepoel dismissing both Josh Bohannon and Marcus Harris, leaving Lancashire struggling at 23 for 3.

Jennings and Rocky Flintoff, who scored 23, combined for a crucial 37-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Jennings reached his sixth Championship half-century of the season before being caught at second slip.

Following a brief rain delay, Lancashire continued to face difficulties when George Balderson was bowled by Swanepoel, and Nauman Ali was trapped lbw by Ben Allison without scoring. Ben Walkden provided some resistance with a knock of 26 before rain disrupted play again.

After the rain delay, Bailey’s contribution of 34 sparked some life in the Lancashire innings. However, Worcestershire’s response saw them lose opener Dan Lategan to Bailey’s bowling. Jake Libby and Rehaan Edavalath survived through to the end of the day’s play, which concluded just before the 6 o’clock bells of Worcester Cathedral sounded.

    Match scorecard

Worcestershire made the most of the bowler-friendly conditions at New Road as Lancashire were bowled out for 180.

Having lost day one to rain, the home side bowled out the visitors cheaply largely thanks to paceman Beyers Swanepoel (4-37) and spinner Fateh Singh (3-27).

Former Lancashire skipper Keaton Jennings hit 55, while tailender Tom Bailey made 34, as the final two visiting wickets added 65 runs, before he then claimed the late wicket of home opener Dan Lategan.

But, after bad light ended play, Worcestershire will resume on 12-1 on Saturday.

Invited to bat first on an overcast morning, Lancashire endured a challenging start when Matty Hurst edged Tom Taylor to backward point.

When Matthew Waite and Swanepoel struck in quick succession to remove Josh Bohannon and Marcus Harris cheaply, Lancs were 23-3.

But Jennings was joined by the in-form Rocky Flintoff, who made 23 to help add 37 for the fourth wicket.

He fell to spinner Singh, courtesy of a sharp Ben Allison catch at first slip, to leave Lancs 6-4 at lunch. Singh then had Arav Shetty well caught after the restart by Rehaan Edavalath.

Jennings completed his sixth Championship half-century of the summer before edging to second slip.

Resuming after a brief delay for rain, Lancashire’s problems mounted when George Balderson first played down the wrong line to a Swanepoel ball that clattered into off stump, before Nauman Ali was trapped LBW by Ben Allison without scoring.

A plucky 26 from Ben Walkden proved valuable before a second rain interruption of the day meant play was halted again.

On the restart, Lancs number 10 Bailey added a useful 34 – and that sparked the visitors into life just four balls into the reply.

First, Bailey snared last week’s maiden centurion Lategan and he could have had two in the over had Edavalath’s edge carried to keeper Hurst. But Jake Libby and Edavalath survived the remaining five overs before the light went just before the six o’clock Worcester Cathedral bells.
