Phil Foden Speaks Out on Man United Red Card: “I Think I Came Back Really Fresh-Minded”

Headline: Phil Foden Aims for Comeback as Manchester City Faces RB Leipzig

Phil Foden is seeking to rediscover his form under coach Enzo Maresca this season. Not too long ago, Foden was regarded as the best player in England, having won the PFA Player of the Year award during the 2023-24 season and playing a vital role in a Manchester City team that secured its fourth consecutive Premier League title.

However, his performance has fluctuated since then, with both impressive games and frustrating periods. Around the turn of the year, Foden’s goal tally stalled significantly.

The dry spell, lasting nearly ten months and encompassing roughly 35 matches, finally came to an end last month. He found the net in a victory against Ipswich Town and followed that up with a hat-trick against AEK Athens, bringing his tally to four goals in just two games.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of the UEFA Champions League match against RB Leipzig, the 26-year-old reflected on his recent resurgence, which occurs at a crucial time for both himself and the club.

When asked about his personal performance at the start of the season, Foden acknowledged the setback caused by a red card that led him to miss several matches.

“I think personally, it’s gone really well. Obviously, I had the very unfortunate red card against [Manchester] United, which put a brake on the good,” he stated. “I think I came back really fresh-minded and sharp; I’ve been involved in a lot of goals recently, so I’ve been really happy with my own performances.”

Turning a Forced Break to His Advantage

The red card incident occurred during September’s derby against Manchester United, where Foden was sent off after an altercation with captain Bruno Fernandes. He utilized this time off to recharge mentally and physically.

“I just took some family time, went on holiday,” Foden shared. “I was a very long time without playing football, which felt really strange, but it gave me time to work on things I needed to work on. And when I came back, I just felt fresh and like I could help the team.”

Now back in goal-scoring form, including a standout performance during the 5-1 Champions League victory over AEK Athens, he was asked if he could return to the consistent output that earned him the Premier League Player of the Season accolade two years ago.

“Hopefully! [What’s the key to that, then?] Consistency, just keep playing regularly, being happy, positive and being in the right positions to score as well,” Foden replied. “Hopefully, I can get back to that level. I think I’m slightly starting to get there now with my recent performances so hopefully, I just keep growing and keep getting better.”

Where the Confidence is Coming From

Foden attributed his recent positive shift to building confidence, maintaining rhythm, and developing a strong connection with his teammates.

“Goals and being involved in goals gives you a lot of confidence,” he remarked. “And when you’re playing regularly as well, you kind of just get into a rhythm and a groove. Also, it helps when you play with similar players as well; I feel like you kind of understand what they’re going to do before even thinking about it. All of those things there definitely help but we’ll see what happens.”

Foden’s return to form comes at a critical juncture, especially with Antoine Semenyo sidelined due to injury. City has recently experienced a dip in performance, falling from the top of the Premier League following back-to-back losses to Aston Villa and Brighton and Hove Albion. A victory in Germany against RB Leipzig could significantly boost their UEFA Champions League campaign.

With former City defender Martin Demichelis on the opposing side, Foden’s sharpness and confidence will be crucial if Manchester City aims to regain its early-season form.
