Plymouth Argyle has secured central defender Alex Mitchell on a three-year contract from Championship club Charlton Athletic for an undisclosed fee.

The 24-year-old played a crucial role in Argyle’s defense during his season-long loan in 2025-2026, making 40 League One appearances as the team finished eighth, just two points short of the play-offs.

He earned the Supporters’ Player of the Season title, helping shore up a defense that had conceded 88 goals during their previous Championship campaign.

Head coach Tom Cleverley said on the club website: “I’m so happy we’ve got Mitch back with us. He was superb for us last season, and everyone knows what a huge presence he is, both in defense and off the field.

“You need characters like him in a group if you are to be successful. What is also so nice is his desire to return. He clearly enjoyed playing in green and white, and for him to want to come back is very pleasing to us.”

Mitchell shared with BBC Radio Devon that Cleverley’s influence had a significant impact on his development.

“If you look at the player I was when I first came here compared to where I am now, I think there’s a lot of improvement, and it’s something I’ll forever be grateful for him for,” Mitchell said. “His man management, the way he’s dealt with stuff I’ve had going on and stuff that other lads have had going on, there hasn’t been a better way to handle it.

“He’s a brilliant manager and I can’t really speak highly enough about him.”

The only uncertainty was whether the two clubs could finalize an agreement for the 24-year-old, whose contract with the Addicks was nearing its end.

Argyle has indicated they are navigating a tight budget this summer, but the recent sale of star striker Lorent Tolaj to Bristol City has provided the necessary funds.
