Rangers Consider Move for Girona Attacker Kim Min-su Following Failed Transfer for Driouech

If recent reports from the Catalan outlet Cadena SER are accurate, Rangers are set to pursue a significant transfer for South Korean winger Kim Min-su. After the failure to secure PSV winger Couhaib Driouech, the Glasgow club is now looking to activate the £8.5 million release clause to bring Kim to Ibrox this summer.

The 20-year-old player moved to Catalonia a decade ago and developed through various youth ranks, playing for Penya Blaugrana Cinc Copes, Escola de Futbol Premier Barcelona, CE Mercantil, and CF Damm. Eventually, he joined Girona for their Juvenil squad.

During the 2024-25 season, Kim showcased his talent by making six appearances for Girona’s first team. Last summer, he was loaned to Segunda Division side Andorra, where he proved his worth, scoring six goals and providing four assists in 40 La Liga2 matches.

Following Girona’s relegation from La Liga, Kim could achieve a vital first-team role in their effort to return to the top division. He started on the left flank in their season opener against CD Leganés. However, Girona may reduce his asking price to avoid a potential Bosman exit when his contract expires at the end of the season.

Rangers Look to Strengthen Their Wing Positions

Rangers have significantly enhanced their squad this season, adding several players, including Lawrence Shankland and Daisuke Yokota, to their offensive options. As they look for another ‘number 9’ due to Youssef Chermiti’s ACL injury, filling the wide positions has become crucial. So far, Yokota stands as the only addition since the departures of Oliver Antman, Danilo, and Nedim Bajrami.

Yokota has shown promise on the right side with his skill and creativity. Meanwhile, Djeidi Gassama and Findlay Curtis have rotated on the flanks but will need to perform at a higher level to challenge their rivals, Celtic, who have made strong summer signings. In contrast, Rangers’ new signings have yet to find their form under manager Derek McInnes.

Potential Impact of Kim Min-su on Rangers

Kim is primarily right-footed and favors a position on the left as an inverted winger. His speed and agility create a constant threat on the field, and his off-the-ball movement and direct play could enhance McInnes’ aggressive wing strategy focused on quick transitions. While Kim may initially struggle with the physical demands of Scottish football due to concerns about endurance, acquiring him this month would signal Rangers’ ambitions, considering his profile and potential.

If a recent report from the Catalan outlet Cadena SER is true, Rangers are eyeing an ambitious move for Kim Min-su. They have set their sights on the Girona attacker after a deal for PSV winger Couhaib Driouech collapsed, but the Glasgow giants might have to trigger his £8.5m release clause to have him at Ibrox this summer.

The 20-year-old South Korean wide attacking ace moved to Catalonia ten years ago. There, he progressed through Penya Blaugrana Cinc Copes, Escola de Futbol Premier Barcelona, CE Mercantil and CF Damm’s youth ranks before being roped in by Girona,  initially for their Juvenil squad.

After an impressive stint with the reserves, Kim made six first-team appearances during the 2024-25 season. He was loaned out to Segunda Division outfit Andorra last summer for regular minutes, and the youngster made his presence known, scoring 6 goals and 4 assists in 40 LaLiga2 outings.

Meanwhile, Girona’s relegation from La Liga could see him secure a key first-team status in their battle for an immediate top-flight return. The winger started down the left in their season opener against CD Leganés; however, Blanquivermells might eventually lower the asking fee to avoid a Bosman exit upon the expiration of his Estadi Montilivi contract by the end of the current campaign.

Rangers Lack Depth Down The Wide

Rangers have bolstered the squad significantly with several new names, including Lawrence Shankland and Daisuke Yokota among the attacking options. While they are exploring the market for another ‘number 9’ in the wake of Youssef Chermiti’s ACL injury, bolstering the wide areas must be a priority, with Yokota the only addition so far following the departure of Oliver Antman, Danilo and Nedim Bajrami.

Yokota, with his flair and finesse, has been lively from the right. Djeidi Gassama and Findlay Curtis have been rotated on the flanks, but they must deliver quality to close the gap on bitter rivals Celtic. The Hoops are flying high across all competitions after exciting summer arrivals, unlike Rangers, whose majority of signings have yet to settle in and deliver under Derek McInnes.

What He Would Offer If The Light Blues Secure His Services

Predominantly right-footed, Kim prefers to operate from the left as an inverted wide forward. His explosive pace and burst bring a persistent threat, and the off-the-ball movement, directness and flexibility he offers across the frontline make him a perfect fit for McInnes’ high-intensity wing play built on rapid transition speed. Although his lack of stamina and endurance might trouble him initially in attuning to the physicality and aggression of Scottish football, snapping him up this month would be a statement of intent from the Gers, given his profile and potential.
