Federico Valverde’s Captaincy Faces Challenge in Real Madrid’s Midfield Selection

Federico Valverde may now hold the title of Real Madrid’s new captain, but his position in José Mourinho’s best starting lineup is not guaranteed.

As noted by MARCA, a significant competition looms in the midfield as Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni vie for the same position.

Mourinho’s preferred formation is likely to include a double pivot, but the midfield dynamics have become increasingly intricate. The recent signing of Bernardo Silva enhances the Portuguese coach’s options, as Mourinho regards him as essential to controlling the game, particularly in light of the club’s failure to secure Rodri’s transfer.

Now, three players are competing for just two places in midfield. Should Bernardo become a linchpin in Mourinho’s tactical scheme, the real battle may rest between Valverde and Tchouameni.

This creates an intriguing scenario for Real Madrid, with their newly appointed captain potentially battling for a starting spot against a teammate whose style may align more closely with the manager’s preferred game plan.

Only One Midfield Place Up for Grabs

The absence of Rodri’s acquisition has influenced Mourinho’s approach to structuring the midfield. Instead of opting for a conventional holding midfielder, the club has brought in Bernardo Silva, whose profile differs significantly from what might typically be expected.

The Portuguese international is perceived as capable of driving the rhythm and offering the creative flair Mourinho desires in the midfield. When fit, his participation is challenging to overlook.

With Bernardo likely to occupy one of the positions and given the freedom to contribute to attacking play, the question of who will fill the other spot becomes critical.

    Valverde vs Tchouameni

Both Valverde and Tchouameni are seasoned players, yet they bring contrasting attributes to Mourinho’s squad.

Valverde excels with his intensity, running power, and adeptness at covering extensive areas of the pitch. He is effective at carrying the ball through midfield, relieving pressure, and fulfilling multiple roles when necessary.

Conversely, Tchouameni is better known for providing a natural defensive balance.

The same report suggests that with Bernardo set to assume more responsibility in ball possession, Mourinho might favor the Frenchman for his role in shielding the midfield behind him.

For the time being, however, Valverde maintains a slight advantage as the season begins. He was one of the first players to return post-World Cup, has played in every pre-season friendly, and is believed to have made a positive impression throughout this preparation phase.

In contrast, Tchouameni is expected to start the season without the same match rhythm, as he has not participated in any of Real Madrid’s pre-season games, giving Valverde an early upper hand in fitness and readiness.

Federico Valverde may be Real Madrid’s new captain, but the armband will not automatically secure him a place in José Mourinho’s strongest starting XI.

According to MARCA, one of the biggest selection battles ahead of the new season could take place in midfield, where Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni are set to compete for the same role.

Mourinho’s preferred setup is expected to include a double pivot, but the midfield picture has become increasingly complicated.

Bernardo Silva’s arrival has given the Portuguese manager a player he views as essential to controlling the game, particularly after Real Madrid failed to complete the signing of Rodri.

That leaves three players competing for two positions.

And if Bernardo is as central to Mourinho’s plans as expected, the real fight comes down to Valverde or Tchouameni.

It creates an interesting situation for Real Madrid, as their newly appointed captain could find himself competing for a starting role against a teammate who may be better suited to the manager’s preferred tactical structure.

Only one midfield place up for grabs

Rather than bringing in a recognised holding midfielder, the club has added Bernardo Silva, who offers a completely different profile.

The Portuguese international is seen as the player most capable of dictating the rhythm and providing the creative control Mourinho wants from midfield.

That makes him difficult to leave out when fit.

With Bernardo occupying one of those roles and being given the freedom to influence the team’s build-up and attacking play, the remaining position is where the real question begins.

    Valverde vs Tchouameni

Valverde and Tchouameni are both established players, but they offer Mourinho very different qualities.

Valverde’s game is built around intensity, running power and his ability to cover large areas of the pitch.

He can carry the ball through midfield, help the team escape pressure and contribute in multiple positions when required.

Tchouameni, meanwhile, offers a more natural defensive balance.

The aforementioned outlet reports that with Bernardo expected to take on greater responsibility in possession, Mourinho could see the Frenchman as the player best suited to protecting the midfield behind him.

His ability to screen the defence, win possession and maintain positional discipline could make him an attractive option.

For now, though, Valverde has the advantage heading into the opening weeks of the season.

This is because he was among the first players to return after the World Cup, has featured in every pre-season friendly and has reportedly made a positive impression.

    That preparation could prove important.

Tchouameni, by contrast, is expected to enter the season without the same match rhythm, having not played in any of Real Madrid’s pre-season.

That gives Valverde an immediate edge in terms of fitness and preparation.
