Real Madrid Probe Scott McTominay as Napoli Contract Talks Stall
MARCA reports in Italy say Real Madrid are targeting Scott McTominay, the 29-year-old midfielder who has thrived in Serie A with Napoli following his 2024 departure from Manchester United.
Negotiations regarding the Scottish international’s contract extension have become complicated, opening the door to an earlier departure.
Renewal complications open the door?
Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis does not view a renewal for the Scotland player as a priority, despite his current agreement lasting until June 2028.
His representatives, however, wish to reach a resolution as soon as possible.
Given the circumstances, Real Madrid have reached out to McTominay’s camp, although Madrid are not the only club tracking his situation.
News of the Scottish star has reportedly caught the attention of the Santiago Bernabeu, where the club seeks reinforcements in midfield.
The former Manchester United player does not perfectly match the controlling midfielder profile Real Madrid want, one capable of dictating the tempo from the centre.
Still, his contract uncertainty appears to have raised concerns at Valdebebas.
A special relationship with Mourinho
Scott McTominay is a player Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho knows well. The Portuguese coach gave the Scottish international his Manchester United debut at 18 in 2017 and still calls him “my boy”.

McTominay has also answered directly when asked if he would consider joining Real Madrid if Mourinho called him about a move to the Spanish capital.
“If he called, I would think about it,” the midfielder admitted, keeping the option open.
McTominay has grown into a key figure at Napoli, with his goals, physical presence and influence helping him establish a major role at the club.
