Former Referee Says Real Madrid Superstar Should Have Received Yellow Card for Diving Against Racing

Real Madrid Triumphs 3-0 Against Racing Santander Amid Controversial Penalty Decision

Real Madrid achieved a convincing 3-0 victory over Racing Santander on Sunday, thanks to goals from Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham, and Yan Diomande. The win marks the sixth consecutive triumph for Madrid and underscores their impressive form under manager Jose Mourinho. However, the evening’s success was somewhat marred by a contentious refereeing call.

Former Spanish referee Eduardo Iturralde Gonzalez expressed strong criticism regarding the decision to award a penalty to Madrid, as reported by Carrusel Deportivo.

Iturralde Questions Penalty Call on Mbappe

The controversy arose early in the match when Racing midfielder Matteo Prati made slight contact with Mbappe’s chest inside the penalty area. Referee Jose Luis Munuera awarded a penalty kick, which Mbappe confidently converted.

Despite Mbappe’s success from the spot, Iturralde did not agree with the call made by the referee.

“The referee sees that someone puts a hand on Mbappe’s chest and thinks that is enough,” Iturralde commented.

He further asserted, “It should have been a direct free kick for Racing and a yellow card for Mbappe for diving,” questioning the VAR’s oversight of the incident.

Real Madrid’s Performance Stands Out

Regardless of the disputed penalty, Real Madrid’s performance was undeniably dominant. Even without the controversial penalty decision, Los Blancos appeared set to secure the three points comfortably at El Sardinero. Mourinho’s squad showcased exceptional skill, particularly in the first half, and might have increased their lead had they continued at full intensity.

The awarding of a penalty to Mbappe may have been debatable, but ultimately, the referee’s decision stood. He would have issued a yellow card had he found that the Frenchman had simulated a foul.

Despite the controversy, the VAR team did not find sufficient grounds to overturn the referee’s call. Real Madrid ultimately secured the three points, shifting their focus next to their upcoming matches against AEK Athens and Valencia.
