Derry City Faces Challenge After Loss to Rijeka in First Leg of Conference League Tie
Derry City must overcome a one-goal deficit in the second leg of their Conference League second qualifying round tie as Rijeka secured a 1-0 victory against the Candystripes in Croatia.
The match remained goalless at halftime, with Rijeka controlling possession but failing to create clear chances. In the final minutes of the first half, Derry City nearly took the lead with a close effort from Michael Duffy.

Croatia international Toni Fruk, recently returned from the World Cup, broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute, punishing a lapse in concentration from Derry’s defense.
Tiernan Lynch’s team will host Rijeka at the Brandywell on July 30.
Rijeka Takes Advantage After First Leg
The home team dominated most of the first half, yet did not significantly threaten Derry goalkeeper Brian Maher.
Niko Jankovic, Branko Pavic, and Mladen Devetak all missed opportunities for Rijeka, who held the ball but lacked a decisive edge.
Derry City struggled to make an impact until the final five minutes of the half, where they were unlucky not to leave with the lead.

Michael Duffy’s shot from within the box seemed destined for the bottom corner but was deflected wide at the last moment.
Rijeka took an early lead in the second half, with Fruk finding the net after capitalizing on a moment of weakness in Derry’s defense.
Shortly after, Rijeka nearly doubled their advantage, but debutant Brooklyn Lyons-Foster cleared Daniel Adu-Adjei’s shot off the line, and Maher subsequently saved Tiago Dantas’ follow-up attempt.
Derry City responded with a series of substitutions aimed at boosting their performance.
Adam O’Reilly launched a counterattack and delivered a precise cross towards Duffy, who was set to head the ball home. However, Fruk intervened with an impressive acrobatic clearance, denying Duffy a crucial goal.
Justas Lasickas squandered a significant chance for Rijeka in injury time, as they settled for a slim one-goal advantage heading into the return leg at the Ryan McBride Brandywell next week.
