Spain Dominates Argentina in 2026 World Cup Final, Led by Rodri’s Stellar Performance

EAST RUTHERFORD, NEW JERSEY — Spain and Argentina’s 2026 World Cup Final devolved into a bunch of street fighters at the symphony, and La Roja‘s maestro kept his head with loads of pep in his step.

Maybe we should capitalize the p in Pep.

Rodri and his Spanish team absolutely shut down Lionel Messi and defending champions Argentina well before the Albiceste went down to 10 men in New Jersey, falling 1-0 at MetLife Stadium on Sunday.

We’re talking zero shot attempts — not just for Messi but for the team. So 0.00 xG with just two touches in the Spanish box. La Roja goalkeeper Unai Simon, as good as he’s been, may as well have taken a taxi to a New York cinema to catch “The Odyssey” in iMax.

MORE — New York a fitting host for the World Cup Final

In fact, when Rodri left the game late in the first period of extra time, Messi had 29 total touches of the ball. Rodri — the metronome, destroyer, and long-distance delivery man — had 116.

Argentina could not get the ball to Messi. They did a lot of things. Hard fouls, post-whistle “afters,” and more — but they just couldn’t find him. Perhaps it’s a bit fitting — the villains couldn’t find their hero.

And Rodri was a massive part of it.

Rodri marks the GOAT mark out of a final

Forty-seven players have won the Ballon d’Or and one of them just padlocked the throne room for eight-time winner Messi in the 2026 World Cup Final.

World Cup tournaments have often proven an appropriate stage for coronations, and it seems logical that the architect of Spain’s second triumph gets his kingly status as the most complete midfielder of his generation.

Rodri was handpicked by Pep Guardiola — ironically, regional royalty from Catalonia — to revolutionize his Manchester City project, and the pair worked together to produce the most dominant champion in Premier League history.

In stabilizing City’s possession under Pep, Rodri picked up more than a few tricks in becoming a complete player.

And that’s what Rodri was in this tournament as well as this match

    • 101-of-106 passes completed

    • 16 passes into the final third (game-high)

But it’s more than just the stats, it’s the ground occupied by this genius. He knew where Messi — a historically-brilliant space spotter and danger sniffer — was and wanted to be, and closed those doors all game long.

And yes at the end of the day, shutting out a 39-year-old Lionel Messi isn’t slamming the door on a GOAT in his prime, but it is so impressive given Messi entered the day with eight goals at this tournament. Not only was he kept from scoring another goal, he was kept from getting another shot attempt.
