Roma’s Summer Transfer Plans Hit Snags as Summerville and Garnacho Opt for Other Clubs

Roma’s efforts to secure a top-tier wide forward this summer have unraveled, with Crysencio Summerville set to join Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia and Alejandro Garnacho opting for a move to Aston Villa.

According to Tuttosport, Al-Hilal disrupted the Summerville negotiations at the last moment, presenting West Ham with an offer that includes approximately €75 million in bonuses and a lucrative contract worth €16 million net per season for the Dutch player until 2031. Roma had previously settled on a fee of about €50 million with the London club and proposed annual terms of €4.5 million, leading to Summerville appearing likely to join the team. However, Simone Inzaghi’s club made an offer that neither the player nor West Ham could refuse.

Garnacho Waits for Roma Before Choosing Aston Villa

The second setback arrived concurrently, as Fabrizio Romano reports that Garnacho, who had been a long-time target for Roma, waited for the Giallorossi’s response until the end before deciding to stay in the Premier League with Villa. The influential factor was the deal structure: Roma’s offer involved a loan with a conditional obligation to buy based on the Argentine reaching 60% of appearances, while Villa’s terms were more easily met.

The dual disappointment leaves sporting director Tony D’Amico back at square one, and head coach Gian Piero Gasperini continues to seek the attacking reinforcement he has sought since pre-season began. Gasperini had previously expressed his dissatisfaction regarding Roma’s slow pace in the transfer market following Zeki Celik’s exit to Juventus. Given the club’s self-imposed wage restrictions, the search for a wide forward to support Paulo Dybala and Matias Soulé will need to restart with alternative options such as Ajax’s Mika Godts still under consideration.
