Wrexham Women kicked off their Champions League journey with a thrilling 4-2 victory against FC Pyunik in the first qualifying round semi-final at the Racecourse.

Jenny Sugarman’s team will next face Riga of Estonia, who previously defeated Glentoran 4-1, in Saturday’s first qualifying round final.

This match marked Wrexham’s European debut after they claimed the Adran Premier title for the first time last season.

Their win also marked the first time a Welsh team has triumphed in the Champions League since Cardiff Met in the 2019-20 season.

The Armenian champions took an early lead after 12 minutes, as Susanna Badalya capitalized on a poor clearance from Wrexham goalkeeper Liz Craven, scoring from outside the penalty box.

Wrexham responded quickly, with a strong run down the left from Faye Knox. Her cross was perfectly met by Katie Barker, leveling the score and calming the home side’s nerves.

Barker, a former Newcastle United striker, almost scored again, but her attempt was saved by Pyunik goalkeeper Amber Lockwood.

Wrexham took the lead five minutes into the second half, as Lili Jones’ right-footed effort from the edge of the penalty area deflected slightly, finding the top corner.

This goal boosted the home side’s confidence as they sought a third goal, which arrived in the 62nd minute when Lockwood fumbled Jones’ shot, allowing Ava Suckley to tap in from close range.

Despite Wrexham’s strong performance, Pyunik kept the match alive when Luiza Ghazaryan’s powerful shot left Craven with no chance.

Wrexham winger Knox missed a great opportunity for a fourth goal, but new signing Natasha Thomas ultimately sealed the historic victory in the dying moments, even striking the bar during added time.
