Schalke 04 Criticizes Hoffenheim’s High Ticket Prices Ahead of Bundesliga Match
FC Schalke 04 has expressed strong concerns regarding the ticket prices set by TSG Hoffenheim for their upcoming Bundesliga match on Sunday in Sinsheim. Hoffenheim is charging spectators as much as €90 for seats at the PreZero Arena, leading to significant complaints from Schalke officials about the steep cost for matches against teams with large traveling fan bases.
As reported by Kicker, tickets in the same category will only cost €25 when Hoffenheim faces Bundesliga newcomer SV Elversberg in January. Despite both teams earning promotion to Germany’s top division last season, the apparent gap in support for Hoffenheim’s matches has influenced their pricing strategy.
Schalke anticipates that around 11,000 fans will travel to support the team, although only approximately 3,000 tickets were allocated for the visiting supporters. Consequently, many Schalke fans have opted to buy tickets in other areas of the stadium.
The match arrives amid a challenging period for Schalke, who are yet to secure a victory in their last five Bundesliga outings. Nevertheless, the visiting fans are expected to make a notable impact at the 30,150-capacity venue.
Schalke Raises Concerns Over Ticket Pricing
Sebastian Buntkirchen, Schalke’s director of fan culture, has openly criticized Hoffenheim’s strategy of imposing higher ticket fees for games against clubs with large followings. In an interview with Sky Germany, he accused Hoffenheim of capitalizing on the strong demand from Schalke’s traveling supporters.
“They know Schalke bring a lot of fans, so they set higher ticket prices because they know Schalke supporters will buy them,” Buntkirchen stated, pointing out that prices nearing €90 for individual seats are unacceptable. This pricing situation particularly impacts fans who fail to obtain tickets via the official away allocation and must resort to purchasing more expensive options within the stadium.
Hoffenheim Responds to Ticket Pricing Concerns
In defense of their pricing structure, Hoffenheim explained that increased ticket costs for popular matches enable the club to offer affordable seats throughout the season. A statement released to the German Press Agency (DPA) noted that higher demand leads to the creation of premium ticket categories.
“For matches that are particularly in demand, there are correspondingly higher-priced ticket categories,” Hoffenheim stated, adding that they still offer seats starting at €29 for adults and €18 for children for these sought-after fixtures.
The club’s ticket pricing is designed to support family-friendly options, and to maintain stable season ticket prices long-term. Hoffenheim identifies matches against major teams such as Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, VfB Stuttgart, Hamburger SV, and Schalke as particularly desirable encounters.
This ticket pricing discussion is not new, as complaints arose previously from Hamburg supporters after their team’s recent 3-2 win in Sinsheim.
Hoffenheim regularly faces the challenge of accommodating teams with significantly larger traveling fan bases while experiencing difficulties filling their own stadium. Last season, the average attendance was around 25,000, leaving several thousand seats empty in a stadium that holds over 30,000.
Consequently, visiting fans have the opportunity to create a large presence beyond the designated away section, occasionally leading to a situation where the home supporters are outnumbered.
Karlsruhe Fans Could Join Hoffenheim’s Europa League Match
In a related story, Hoffenheim may see another noticeable visiting presence when they host Austrian side Sturm Graz in the Europa League on November 26. According to Kicker, Karlsruher SC supporters are being encouraged to purchase tickets for the match in Sinsheim due to their longstanding friendship with Sturm Graz fans and the proximity of the clubs.
While it remains unclear how many KSC supporters might attend, this could lead to another unexpected surge in away fans at the PreZero Arena.
As the focus shifts to Sunday’s clash with Schalke, the controversy over ticket prices continues to play a significant role in the narrative surrounding the upcoming matchup.
