Tottenham manager Roberto de Zerbi expressed that he was “not angry” and insisted there was “no panic” following his team’s second consecutive loss, which has left them at the bottom of the Premier League. The defeat against Newcastle, where goals from Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa in a rapid 10-minute second-half sequence secured a 2-0 victory for the visitors, was a disappointing chapter for Spurs supporters who exited the stadium early.

Fans have reasons for frustration, having witnessed just three home league victories in the last 23 matches at their impressive stadium. Currently sitting in 17th place in the Premier League for the 2024-25 and 2025-26 seasons, Spurs narrowly avoided relegation last year, but expectations were high for this season.

With over £300 million spent during the summer transfer window, Spurs supporters anticipated a strong push for European competition, especially after their Europa League win two seasons ago and a spot in the last 16 of the Champions League earlier this year. However, the current Premier League campaign has seen them play two matches, lose both, and yet to score a single goal, placing them firmly at the bottom.

“We can improve in the defensive phases but today was an unfair result,” De Zerbi stated. “We are disappointed with the outcome, particularly for our fans. We are striving to become a great team, and once we do, we can rewrite the narrative of the last two seasons for Tottenham.”

‘I know where we are going and what the plan is’

Following a narrow escape from relegation last season, Tottenham aimed to distance themselves from a similar struggle this year. The club made significant investments by bringing in midfielders Mateus Fernandes from West Ham and Sandro Tonali from Newcastle for £85 million and £100 million, respectively. Additionally, they signed defender Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton for £52 million and Manchester City winger Savio for £75 million, although Savio missed the Newcastle match due to “muscle fatigue.”

Other additions include defenders Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson, along with goalkeeper Martin Dubravka, who arrived on free transfers. Striker Omar Marmoush also made his debut against Newcastle, following a loan from Manchester City, with an agreement for a permanent transfer of £60 million effective next summer.

After a previous 3-0 loss to Brentford, Tottenham’s woes continued at home against Newcastle, where the Magpies capitalized on both of their shots on target. In contrast, Spurs failed to score from their 17 attempts, with only six on target.

“Forget the result,” insisted De Zerbi. “I am not angry; we are working well and were just unlucky today. There is no panic. I know our direction and the plan we have. I apologize to the fans for the result, but we need to improve and establish a stronger connection among players.”

Old questions return early in season

Former Tottenham and England keeper Joe Hart shared a less optimistic view of Spurs’ performances, commenting on the visible frustration in the stadium. Hart noted that fans are questioning what the team is striving to achieve, especially when compared to a Newcastle team that has undergone significant changes and appeared cohesive, unlike Tottenham.

Regarding the difficulties Tottenham faces, Hart remarked that the team seems unable to convey a clear message to the fans, highlighting the pressure on De Zerbi to quickly integrate new players in the fast-paced Premier League environment.

Another former England goalkeeper, Rob Green, echoed these sentiments on BBC Radio 5 Live, stating that while Lukas Hornicek made a couple of saves in the first half, Tottenham lacked creativity and goal-scoring ability. Green remarked that the same concerns from last season persist, indicating a need for substantial improvement within the squad.

The transfer window is set to close on Tuesday, with De Zerbi indicating his desire to bring in “one more player in one specific position.” After the match, he addressed speculation surrounding the potential exits of Kevin Danso, Pape Matar Sarr, and Richarlison, stating that any players wishing to depart must provide a financial solution to the club.

De Zerbi, who took charge in March and secured 11 points in seven matches to keep Tottenham up, emphasized that resolving the challenges faced by the club won’t be instantaneous. “We need to work hard and foster connections among the players,” he stated. “We managed to stay in the Premier League together last season; now we’re focusing on improvement. We have a strong squad and talented players.”

Former Tottenham and England goalkeeper Joe Hart was not as positive about Spurs’ performances and said: “The frustration in the stadium, and among the fans, will be they are looking at that Spurs team and wondering what they are trying to achieve.

“When you see a Newcastle side who have been through massive change over the summer – and a more difficult change than Spurs have – it’s hard as in two games you can clearly see what [Newcastle boss] Matthias Jaissle is trying to do. The players are on board with it and they are flying.

“The concern for Tottenham is they can’t say the same. But there’s been a lot of change and it’s not easy to bed in that many players under so much pressure.

“Hardly anyone has been able to find the remedy at the club so it’s not like it’s an easy fix. They’ve not just suddenly fallen off a cliff, they’ve been struggling in the league for a while.

“Roberto de Zerbi needs to get his new players to settle in quickly as the Premier League comes at you so fast, and it feels like his team are second-guessing everything at the moment.”

Former England goalkeeper Rob Green, speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, added: “Lukas Hornicek made some saves in the first half but Tottenham were short of invention, creation, goals.

“For Tottenham, the same questions last season are still here this season. Performances like this will indicate that they need a vast improvement from this set of players that have come into this club.

“They will need the characters as much as anything to turn this around. It doesn’t take much for these Spurs fans to turn and the belief start to drain from the players.”

One more signing to come?

The transfer window closes on Tuesday, and on Friday De Zerbi said he was still seeking “one player more in one specific position”.

After the Newcastle match he was asked about the potential departures of Kevin Danso, Pape Matar Sarr and Richarlison, who have all been linked with moves away from Tottenham.

“I have very good relationships but if they want to leave, they have to bring the solution, the economic solution, to the club, and they can go,” he said.

De Zerbi was only appointed at the end of March, earning 11 points in seven matches to keep Spurs up, and insists it will not be a quick fix to the club’s problems.

“We have to improve and to change two seasons like the last two is impossible in 10 days and with people in the transfer market,” said the Italian.

“We have to work hard on the pitch and find the connection with the players because last season before the end of the season we were in the Championship and we stayed up together.

“Now we have to keep calm and focus on improvement. We have a great squad and great players.”
