Swansea City Secures Loan Signing of Jensen Seelt from Sunderland

Swansea City has completed the loan signing of Sunderland defender Jensen Seelt for the rest of the season. The 23-year-old Dutch centre-back has made 21 appearances for Sunderland since his transfer from PSV Eindhoven in 2023. Earlier in his career, he spent the first half of last season on loan at Bundesliga club Wolfsburg.

Seelt’s addition to the squad comes as Swansea receives positive news regarding defender Ben Cabango’s heel injury, which is confirmed to be not severe. Cabango sustained the injury during last weekend’s match against Sheffield United but may still be available for the upcoming clash with Derby County on Saturday.

With Seelt now joining the ranks, he will add to the central defensive choices available to head coach Vitor Matos, which currently include Cabango, Stephen Welsh, and Filip Lissah. However, Swansea may pursue another centre-back before the transfer window closes next Tuesday, especially after losing Cameron Burgess to an Achilles injury, expected to sideline him until next season.

Matos has indicated that Lissah will predominantly serve as a right-back option alongside Josh Key.

Seelt’s early career includes two appearances in the Premier League from the start of last season, although he faced challenges due to a serious knee injury during Sunderland’s promotion campaign in 2024-25. He dealt with knee issues again while at Wolfsburg, marking his last appearance in December 2025.

“Jenson is a talented young player, and he will provide us with valuable depth in our defensive options,” Matos commented on the new signing. “He brings physicality and aerial dominance, but also a composure on the ball and ability to read the game. We are happy he will spend the rest of the season with us and we look forward to integrating him into the squad.”

Seelt has participated in Sunderland’s pre-season matches and is likely to be considered for selection in Swansea’s upcoming game against Derby. Meanwhile, Stephen Eustaquio may also make an appearance at Pride Park following his recent permanent move to Swansea from Porto.

Swansea City have signed Sunderland defender Jensen Seelt on loan for the remainder of the season.

The Dutch centre-back, 23, has played 21 times for Sunderland since joining the Black Cats from PSV Eindhoven in 2023 and spent the first half of last season on loan at Bundesliga club Wolfsburg.

Seelt’s arrival comes despite the fact that Swansea have been boosted by news that Ben Cabango’s heel injury is not serious.

Club captain Cabango limped off during the draw with Sheffield United last weekend but could yet feature when Vitor Matos’ team go to Derby County on Saturday.

Seert will join Cabango, Stephen Welsh and Filip Lissah as central defensive options for Matos, though Swansea could yet move for another centre-back before next Tuesday’s transfer deadline.

They have lost Cameron Burgess, who played every minute of the 2025-26 Championship campaign, to an Achilles injury which is likely to rule him out until next season.

Lissah, meanwhile, is primarily viewed by Matos as one of his right-back options alongside Josh Key.

Seelt played twice in the Premier League in the early stages of last season having featured only once in Sunderland’s promotion 2024-25 campaign, thanks in part to a serious knee injury.

He again had knee problems during his spell at Wolfsburg, with his most recent appearance coming in December 2025.

“Jenson is a talented young player, and he will provide us with valuable depth in our defensive options,” said Swansea head coach Vitor Matos.

“He brings physicality and aerial dominance, but also a composure on the ball and ability to read the game. We are happy he will spend the rest of the season with us and we look forward to integrating him into the squad.”

Seelt has been involved in Sunderland’s pre-season games and is in contention for Swansea’s game at Derby.

Stephen Eustaquio could also be involved at Pride Park after joining Swansea on a permanent deal from Porto.
