In the latest episode of the Transfer Insider podcast, journalist Pete O’Rourke revealed that Tottenham Hotspur is considering a move for Celtic midfielder Arne Engels. O’Rourke stated,

“It’s going to be hard for Celtic to keep hold of him this summer, despite rejecting an offer for him in January.

“Obviously, they’ve got more time to plan ahead in this summer transfer window. I’m sure Engels himself would be interested in the move away if a move to the Premier League comes up.

“For Tottenham, again, their interest has come as a surprise maybe in some respects. They’ve bolstered their midfield already with Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes.

“So whether they see Engels joining that as well remains to be seen, but they are showing no signs of slowing down in the transfer market.”

Engels’ Impressive Numbers in the Scottish Premiership

Engels had a solid campaign at the Glaswegian club recently as he was responsible for putting in a run of impressive performances for them in the middle of the park. The Belgian talent registered seven goals and eight assists in 46 matches for Celtic last season across all competitions.

The 22-year-old is currently among the best central midfielders in the Scottish Premiership. Thus, it is no surprise that Spurs are hoping to sign him later this year.

His current contract at Celtic Park will run out in the summer of 2028. Hence, Tottenham would need to make a convincing offer if they want to secure his services in this transfer window.

Should Tottenham Hotspur Boss Roberto De Zerbi Snap Up Engels This Summer?

Engels excels in tackles and has a keen ability to read danger, making timely interceptions for his team. He does not hesitate to clear threats when necessary and is a precise passer from midfield.

The Belgian midfielder contributes by scoring and creating important goals. While primarily a box-to-box player, he is also capable of playing as a right-sided wide player or even as a right-back. However, it remains to be seen whether he can adapt to the physical demands and high intensity of the Premier League if Spurs secure a transfer for him this summer.

Engels could enhance the quality of Tottenham’s midfield and is well-positioned to challenge for regular first-team football under manager Roberto De Zerbi.
