Headline: Enzo Maresca’s Midfield Strategy Turns the Tide for Manchester City Against Bournemouth

Enzo Maresca surprised many by making bold team selections in his inaugural Premier League match as Manchester City manager, notably by placing Marc Guehi in a holding midfield role, which proved to be a tactical success.

Leading up to kickoff, the spotlight shone on rival teams Manchester United and Tottenham after their disheartening defeats. However, Manchester City faced pressure themselves after a disappointing 3-0 loss to champions Arsenal in the Community Shield, leaving them at risk of suffering back-to-back losses to start the season.

In a dramatic turn of events, Guehi’s towering header, along with Josko Gvardiol’s composed finish, secured an unexpected comeback victory for City against Bournemouth.

Before the match, eyebrows were raised when Maresca opted to include six players capable of playing in defense. The situation became intriguing during warm-ups, as it appeared that England international Guehi would play as a holding midfielder. When the whistle blew to start the match, this unconventional arrangement became evident.

Instead of the discussion focusing on Guehi being out of position, his goal shifted the narrative, showcasing Maresca’s insightful strategy.

Guehi reflected on his new role, stating to Sky Sports, “It was just an idea the manager had. We worked on it throughout the week. We’re trying different things, trying solutions for the team. I’m glad it paid off today.”

In a conversation with BBC Sport, he admitted playing in midfield was rare for him, adding, “I enjoyed it simply because I got so much help from so many people. When you have that support, you feel comfortable to go out and play.”

Maresca praised Guehi’s performance, saying, “Marc Guehi has never played as a midfielder, but today he was very good. I visualized him in that role; I always thought he could excel as a midfielder.”

City’s Transformative Approach Amid Transfer Talks

The experiment with Guehi may serve as a long-term solution, as Maresca indicated he provides valuable depth in midfield.

Interestingly, the manager started Mateo Kovacic on the bench, prompting speculation about his intentions regarding player management at the club.

As a summer replacement for legendary manager Pep Guardiola, Maresca has openly expressed the need for new signings before the transfer window closes on 1 September.

In a recent development, BBC Sport reported that City reached an £86 million agreement to acquire midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille. Maresca claimed he was unaware of the deal, having yet to discuss it with upper management.

At just 18 years old, the Moroccan prodigy carries a hefty price tag while stepping into the roles vacated by 2024 Ballon d’Or winner Rodri and Tijjani Reijnders, who departed for Saudi Arabia.

Bouaddi is set to share duties in the midfield pivot alongside record signing Elliot Anderson, who impressed during his Premier League debut, displaying agility and defensive awareness.

Guehi ultimately highlighted his adaptability, netting the 10th Premier League goal of his career with an 84th-minute header.

Defensively, Guehi excelled, winning all three of his tackles—more than any other player—and maintaining a 94.9% pass completion rate from 59 attempts while winning eight of eleven duels.

When asked about his future position, Guehi humorously remarked, “Who knows? Maybe up front. We’ll see.”

Former City goalkeeper Joe Hart remarked, “City looks okay now. It’s intriguing to watch as the team experiments with players in different roles. Anderson and Guehi together is interesting, but I doubt it will last long with Bouaddi’s arrival. Maresca is experimenting during a crucial transitional phase.”

“Manchester City has completely reshaped itself, yet the expectation to win remains unwavering.”

Enzo Maresca might have been expected to keep his head down and not make any curious team selections in his first Premier League game in-charge of Manchester City. Instead, he made the surprising decision to field Marc Guehi in a holding role and, eventually, it turned into a midfield masterstroke.

All the heat prior to kick-off had been on rivals Manchester United and free-spending Tottenham following their demoralising opening game defeats but for 84 minutes on Sunday, that unwanted focus looked set to shift to Etihad Stadium.

City had suffered a chastening 3-0 defeat by champions Arsenal in the Community Shield last Sunday and were heading towards back-to-back defeats to start the season.

But a late rescue act courtesy of a towering header from Guehi – who all the attention was on – and Josko Gvardiol’s cool finish salvaged an unlikely comeback victory against Bournemouth.

Eyebrows were raised before kick-off when Maresca decided to fielded a team consisting of six players that can play as defenders, but the serious questions cropped up during the warm-up.

With the back four going through their routines with a City coach, it appeared England centre-back Guehi would be deployed as holding midfielder. When referee Jarred Gillett blew his whistle to start proceedings, it became clear that this was the reality.

But instead of the story being about Guehi being played out of position, the former Crystal Palace skipper scored to help switch the narrative to it being an Ingenious move from the new manager.

Pundits and supporters were taken aback by the switch in position and so too was the player himself.

Guehi told Sky Sports: “It was just an idea the manager had, we worked on it in the week. We’re trying different things, trying different solutions for the team.

“I’m glad today it paid off in the end.”

He also told BBC Sport he had not played in midfield too often, adding: “I enjoyed it simply because I got so much help from so many people. When you have that you feel comfortable to just go out and play and do what you can for the team.”

Boss Maresca told BBC Match of the Day: “Marc Guehi has never played as a midfielder, today he was very good, so I am happy with the effort from the players.

“Sometimes you visualise things. I know Marc from Palace and I always thought he could play as a midfielder because he is very good. So we tried it for a few days and I think he was quite good.”

City ‘completely changed’ but still ‘expected to win’

The Guehi experiment may end up being a long-term fix with Maresca saying afterwards he provides “a solution” in the middle of the park.

Maresca had started Mateo Kovacic on the bench, so was the Italian boss sending some sort of message to those in the corridors of power at City?

The former Chelsea manager replaced the legendary Pep Guardiola in the summer and has not hidden his desire for the club to bring in new signings before the end of the transfer window on 1 September.

But just 50 minutes before kick-off BBC Sport reported that City had agreed an £86m fee to sign midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille – Maresca said he had no idea about the deal as he has not yet spoken to the decision-makers

At the tender age of just 18, the Moroccan sensation has a massive price tag on his head and has huge boots to fill at City following the departure of 2024 Ballon d’Or winner Rodri to Barcelona, as well as Tijjani Reijnders heading off to Saudi Arabia.

Bouaddi will play in the pivot alongside club-record signing Elliot Anderson, who played an hour on his Premier League debut for City, and showed glimpses of what he will bring to the side, covering plenty of ground and often snuffing out the danger.

But Sunday’s surprise midfield partner Guehi showcased his versatility by scoring the 10th Premier League goal of his career with an 84th minute header.

Overall, Guehi won all three of his tackles – more than any other player on the pitch – while also managing a 94.9% pass completion from 59 attempts and winning eight of his 11 duels.

Asked where he will play next week, Guehi jested: “Who knows? Maybe up front. We’ll see.”

Former City goalkeeper Joe Hart added: “I think City look OK. It’s obviously interesting when they have had such settled world class players that they have almost mixed and matched.

“Anderson and Guehi is an interesting one in midfield but that won’t be a long-term thing, especially with Bouaddi coming in. I think with people coming back late from the World Cup, Maresca is just trying out things in-season, in-game.

“That’s just where Manchester City are at the moment, they’ve completely changed everything about themselves but they’re still expected to win.”
