Aston Villa has announced plans to take legal action against Jamie Carragher, accusing the former footballer of making “unacceptable insults” toward the club and its supporters.
In a statement posted on social media on Friday, Villa’s chairman Nassef Sawiris expressed the club’s displeasure over Carragher’s remarks, emphasizing their commitment to not allowing external comments to hinder their progress in both English and European football.

During an episode of the Stick to Football podcast, Carragher stirred controversy among Villa fans by suggesting that their manager, Unai Emery, might be interested in taking over as head coach at Manchester United.
With Michael Carrick’s future at United appearing uncertain amidst a poor start to the season, Carragher asserted, “Aston Villa will never be Manchester United.” He added, “Surely he would want that opportunity to manage a giant again.”
He continued, “There is a chain in football, whether you like it or not. Real Madrid will take Manchester United’s best player, they did it with [Cristiano] Ronaldo. And there will be teams below Aston Villa, and they’ll take their players or manager, so shut the [expletive] up Aston Villa fans. Aston Villa will never be Manchester United.”
Carragher, who serves as a football pundit for Sky Sports and American broadcaster CBS, discussed the backlash he received following his comments, saying, “It was a joke after the stick Villa fans have given me over saying Emery may fancy joining Man Utd.”

He expressed hope that the clips of him praising Emery and Villa over the years would be recognized, specifically noting his happiness regarding their 2026 Europa League victory in Istanbul.
On the Overlap Daily, Carragher elaborated on his views, stating, “I just think Unai Emery is the best manager in the league and if you’re Man Utd you’re thinking ‘what’s the best we can get?’. I’m not saying he’ll go – I’m just saying if it was me I’d ask the question.” He also compared Emery to Rafa Benitez, indicating that certain managers fit certain clubs.

Carragher acknowledged that his remarks escalated, admitting his response to Villa fans may have been inappropriate, but clarified that he intended it all in jest due to the reaction on his social media.
