Weather Issues Persist Ahead of World Cup Final in New Jersey
After a World Cup repeatedly impacted by thunderstorms and several games delayed due to adverse weather, there could be yet more weather-related disruptions at this weekend’s final.
New York and New Jersey officials have issued an air quality health alert due to wildfire smoke from Canadian wildfires, affecting the entire northeast of the US and southern Canada.
Haze has descended across the region, raising health concerns for residents ahead of Sunday’s final at the New York New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
The New York Office of Emergency Management reported on Thursday that air quality levels had reached “very unhealthy” levels. Officials have advised residents to limit outdoor activities to no more than one hour at a time.
Spain arrived in New Jersey on Wednesday night, just a day after defeating France in their semi-final. They trained outdoors on Thursday, showing no apparent effects from the weather. Argentina is scheduled to begin training in New Jersey on Friday.
Although conditions have been poor in the latter half of this week, improvement is expected on Friday, with rain forecast for Saturday likely to help dissipate some of the smoke.
The final will take place in an open-air stadium, but weather conditions are anticipated to be manageable by game time.
A National Women’s Soccer League match happened on Wednesday night between Gotham FC and Washington Spirit in Queens, despite the poor air quality. Players were required to take two breaks per half due to the conditions.
