Headline: Boca Juniors Triumph in Fiery Superclasico Amidst Late-Game Chaos
A fiery and intense Superclasico between Argentinian teams Boca Juniors and River Plate concluded with defender Gonzalo Montiel being escorted off the pitch by security staff wielding riot shields after receiving a late red card.
The match, a highlight in Argentina’s Primera Division, featured heavy tackles, physical confrontations, and several interruptions, ultimately resulting in a 1-0 victory for Boca Juniors at their home ground, La Bombonera.
The drama unfolded early in the first half when River Plate’s Lucas Martinez Quarta received a straight red card for yanking the shirt of Boca striker Miguel Merentiel just 10 minutes into the game, leaving River Plate with only ten players.
This dismissal heightened the charged atmosphere at La Bombonera, and frustrations boiled over for the visitors when Lautaro Di Lollo scored to put Boca Juniors ahead. The tension escalated in the 79th minute when Montiel committed a late challenge on Lautaro Blanco, leading to a second red card and reducing River Plate to just nine players.
Following his dismissal, Montiel gestured to the fervent Boca fans by pointing to himself, the River Plate badge, and making a spinning motion with his index finger, referencing the two finals River Plate won against Boca Juniors in 2018.
As Montiel left the field, he did so with a smile, provoking a retaliatory response from Boca supporters who began throwing projectiles in his direction.
He was quickly escorted by two security personnel in riot gear, who used their shields to protect him from various thrown objects, including beer cans.
The match posed significant challenges for referee Nicolas Ramirez, who faced criticism for issuing red cards to River Plate players while showing more lenient treatment to Boca Juniors. Players like Blanco, who was fouled by Montiel, had previously only received a yellow card for similar challenges, while other Boca Juniors players avoided reprimands for similar offenses.
