Falkirk Triumphs Over Celtic with Scott Bain’s Stellar Performance
Scott Bain must be hoping that Scotland head coach Sebastien Pocognoli took notice as Falkirk ended a 19-year wait to defeat Celtic. The former Celtic goalkeeper showcased his exceptional skills, leading Falkirk to a decisive 2-0 victory, marking their fourth consecutive win and elevating them to fourth place in the Scottish Premiership.
In an impressive display, Bain proved to be a formidable presence in goal, earning his third clean sheet in a row.
While Bain’s performance captured the spotlight, the entire team excelled, with multiple players contributing to a historic victory that intensified pressure on Martin O’Neill’s squad.
As the Scotland squad prepares for upcoming Nations League fixtures, Bain has likely improved his prospects of not only making the team but possibly securing a starting position.
‘Unbelievable’ Bain Stands Out Between the Sticks
Bain made an impressive nine saves during the match against Celtic, several of which were outstanding, helping his side maintain a clean sheet for the third consecutive game.
Falkirk has now gone 342 minutes without conceding a goal.
“Scott Bain was unbelievable,” commented former Celtic goalkeeper Pat Bonner. “Absolutely unbelievable. It was a terrific display from Falkirk defensively. Falkirk deserves it; they’ve got a fantastic young team.”
Bain reflected on his focused mindset, determined to thwart any attempts Celtic made to score. “I felt really confident in the game,” he said. “I felt confident in the players and the game plan, and I knew that I would be called upon, but it just felt like one of those days where they weren’t going to score.” He added, “You can’t really get a better day as a goalkeeper than thinking that you’re not going to be beaten. So, really, really pleased for my own performance, but more so pleased for the team. It’s a fantastic step in the right direction.”
Bain a Bedrock in Falkirk’s Rise Under McGlynn
The Scotland international extended his contract with Falkirk in January, securing his place at the club until the summer of 2028, with an option for an additional year. At that time, manager John McGlynn praised Bain, stating that “he’s been outstanding from the moment he walked into the club.”
Following this exceptional performance, McGlynn further commended his number one goalkeeper, who is set to turn 35 this month. “Scott Bain had two really outstanding saves [in the first half] and there might have been another very good save, but there weren’t as many as there were in the second half where he had to continuously produce,” he remarked. “So a huge thank you to Scott for the actual game he’s had today.” McGlynn expressed genuine gratitude for Bain’s contributions during a memorable win.
Bain stepped away from a backup role at Celtic and accepted a significant reduction in salary to pursue his ambition of regular playing time. Days like this certainly validate that decision.
So What of Scotland?
With Scotland currently lacking the goalkeeping depth they had in previous years, performances like Bain’s can only bolster his chances. Beyond his notable shot-stopping under pressure, Bain possesses a level of composure with the ball that fits Pocognoli’s style of play.
“I think I’ve performed well since the last camp and I think I’ve been performing well throughout the season,” Bain shared. “So I would hope to be in it [Scotland squad]. I really enjoyed the last camp. I really enjoyed the way the manager worked and seeing what he wants from his team.”
This time, the four-time capped goalkeeper may very well have strengthened his position for further international caps.
