Dirk Kuyt Focuses on Fenerbahce Ahead of Champions League Clash with Liverpool
Dirk Kuyt has affirmed that his loyalty lies with Fenerbahce as they prepare to face Liverpool in the Champions League on Wednesday. The former Liverpool forward has taken interim charge of the Turkish Super Lig club following the recent resignation of Ismail Kartal.
Kuyt, who played for Liverpool from 2006 to 2012, enjoyed a successful career at Anfield, winning the League Cup and reaching the Champions League final. Speaking at a press conference, Kuyt expressed his excitement for the upcoming match, emphasizing that he has no divided loyalties.
“As soon as the draw was done, I was really excited because everyone knows how much Fenerbahce and Liverpool mean to me,” he stated. “From that moment, you know it will be a special occasion.”
He acknowledged the significance of the match for himself while reiterating that his primary concern is the club. “Of course, tomorrow will be a very special occasion for me, but at the stage we’re in, I’m not here for myself,” he said. “I’m here for the club and that’s what is important – to show the fans who deserve much more, a reaction, positive energy, and a good performance.”
Fenerbahce heads into the match struggling with form, having secured only one victory in their last five games across all competitions. They recently suffered a heavy 6-0 defeat to Aston Villa in the Champions League. Kuyt knows that hosting Liverpool presents a tough challenge, but he’s confident in his team’s potential.
“We have really good players, but we need to show up,” Kuyt noted. “When we show up tomorrow with good energy and passion, I think it will be a special night. Liverpool is an amazing team, but so is Fenerbahce, and if we and the fans can show up tomorrow, then Europe will really see how big Fenerbahce is.”
Meanwhile, Liverpool aims to recover from their recent setback, a 1-0 loss to Arsenal that left them nine points behind the Gunners in the Premier League standings. However, Jürgen Klopp’s side has been impressive in the Champions League, achieving maximum points from their first three matches against Atletico Madrid, LASK, and Villarreal.
