Referee Criticized for Soft Penalty and Possible Maguire Red Card in Man United vs Roma Match

Manchester United vs. Roma: Controversial Penalty and Red Card Decision Spark Debate

Italian newspapers criticized the penalty awarded to Manchester United against AS Roma, labeling it ‘very soft,’ while also alleging that Harry Maguire should have received a red card during the match. Roma faced a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Manchester United in a UEFA Champions League clash on Tuesday.

The referee for the match, Jesús Gil Manzano, faced scrutiny from the Italian press over his decisions in the second half. Newspapers such as Corriere dello Sport, Tuttosport, and Gazzetta dello Sport criticized the penalty awarded to Manchester United, which Bruno Fernandes converted. The penalty was given following a collision in the box between Matheus Cunha and Gianluca Mancini, with Corriere stating that Manzano penalized Mancini for negligence.

The newspaper noted, however, that the situation could also be seen differently, as Cunha had lifted his foot, making contact with Mancini’s knee.

Although Fernandes missed the initial penalty, he got a second chance after Bryan Cristante was found to have encroached into the penalty area.

The encroachment was a narrow margin, with Cristante’s foot just over the box’s edge when the penalty was taken. After Vasquez saved the first attempt, the retake was unavoidable.

Italian outlets, including Corriere and Gazzetta, rated referee Gil Manzano a low score of 4/10, with Gazzetta asserting that he ‘got everything wrong’ in the second half.

Another disputed moment occurred later in the match when Maguire, already holding a yellow card, intentionally brought Santiago Castro down, seeming to strike him in a sensitive area. According to Corriere dello Sport, Maguire should have received a second yellow card for his actions.
