Barcelona shifts focus to defensive reinforcements
FC Barcelona is shifting its focus toward strengthening its defensive line following a period of heavy investment in the attack. According to journalist Achraf Ben Ayad, the La Liga champions remain alert to the possibility of bolstering their backline before the new season begins.
Heavy attacking investments
Earlier today, reports confirmed that Barcelona successfully finalized an agreement to sign highly-rated Belgian winger Jesse Bisiwu from Club Brugge.
The imminent official confirmation of Bisiwu highlights Barcelona’s commitment to recruiting elite young talent, continuing a trend of major spending in the final third. The club previously completed a €70 million deal to bring in Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United and secured an agreement to sign Borussia Dortmund forward Karim Adeyemi.
Meanwhile, the Blaugrana continue to advance negotiations for another high-profile forward: Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez.
Defensive stability cannot be ignored
With the frontline reinforced, sporting director Deco and manager Hansi Flick are now focusing on the backline to address a key squad requirement. Despite maintaining a statistically strong defense last season, concerns regarding depth have prompted the board to adjust their transfer strategy.
Apart from the decision to sign Joao Cancelo on a permanent €10 million transfer from Al-Hilal, the club’s hierarchy has largely overlooked defensive acquisitions this summer. While Flick’s tactical plan relies on the versatility of players like Gerard Martin and Eric Garcia, the coaching staff is considering the addition of an elite left-sided central defender to provide long-term stability.
Possible targets
Barcelona is now scouting the market for defensive reinforcements. Improved financial health allows the club to sanction a major bid if the right player becomes available before the transfer window closes.
Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni was previously a target, but the club eventually walked away from the deal. Recently, Tottenham Hotspur defenders Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven have emerged as potential options. The club has also shown interest in RB Leipzig’s Castello Lukeba, though his valuation may prove prohibitive. While Luka Vuskovic was also on the radar, he is set to join Brighton & Hove Albion.
