Burnley Hires Former Basel Manager Celestini as Head Coach

Burnley Appoints Fabio Celestini as New Head Coach Following Nicky Hayen’s Departure

Burnley Football Club has officially announced the appointment of Fabio Celestini as their new head coach, just four days after parting ways with Nicky Hayen. The 50-year-old brings a wealth of experience, having led FC Basel to a domestic double in the 2024-25 season, boasting both the Swiss Super League title and the Swiss Cup to his name.

Prior to this role, Celestini was at the helm of CSKA Moscow, where he clinched the Russian Super Cup. In his first statements as Burnley’s head coach, he expressed confidence in the potential of the club and its players. “I look at Burnley and I see a club with big potential and players with real quality, who can help us achieve our supporters’ ambitions,” he said.

Celestini takes over a team struggling in the Championship, with only one victory to their name this season, placing them at the bottom of the table in 22nd position. Their troubles date back to a challenging Premier League season last year, and they have yet to secure a win at home in over a year.

The search for a new manager began after Hayen was dismissed following a heavy 4-1 defeat against Lincoln City. Diego Lopez, recently appointed as director of football, was tasked with this search. He praised Celestini’s passion and commitment, stating, “Fabio brings the passion, experience and knowledge we were looking for. He showed extraordinary determination and conviction to come to Burnley. We want people who truly want to be here and help this club grow. Fabio is a clear example of that.”
