Phoenix Club Aims for FA Cup Upset Against Diamonds

Headline: AFC Rushden & Diamonds Prepare for Historic FA Cup Debut Against Burton Albion

AFC Rushden & Diamonds will make their FA Cup first-round debut this weekend, marking a significant milestone for the club which rose from the ashes of the original Rushden & Diamonds, which folded in 2011. The Northamptonshire team, originally founded in the early 1990s, enjoyed considerable success under the leadership of Max Griggs before financial difficulties forced its closure.

The chairman of the current club, Rob Usher, expressed the bittersweet nature of this upcoming match against League One side Burton Albion. “It was heartbreaking – we knew we’d been robbed,” Usher recalled the emotional experience of losing the club over a decade ago. He emphasized the determination of the fans, who rallied to create the new club as a testament to their love for the game.

Approximately 2,000 fans are set to travel to see the eighth-tier Diamonds compete on Saturday—a stark contrast to the days when they were a third-tier team in English football. Usher highlighted the bond between supporters and the community, stating, “This is a community, this is an army of people who turn up and give their time and their money, their care, their devotion… not because they want the club to exist, but because they want the club to thrive.”

Initially founded in 1992 through a merger, Rushden & Diamonds achieved remarkable success, reaching the Football League in 2001 and celebrating promotions. However, after financial issues arose and Griggs stepped down, the club faced a decline, leading to its closure in 2011. Its home ground, Nene Park, was demolished in 2017.

AFC Rushden & Diamonds, which now plays at Hayden Road, has delighted fans with a series of victories in the FA Cup, starting from a 5-0 win against Kimberley Miners Welfare in August. They have gained considerable funding from the FA’s prize fund, which currently totals £23,194, as they aim to secure a £47,750 prize for winning the next round.

In an exciting twist, former professional footballer Billy Sharp, who is known for being the Championship’s all-time leading goal-scorer, has decided to return to playing for the club after initially retiring. Sharp shared his enthusiasm for contributing to the team’s aspirations, stating, “This club means a lot to me; it gave me my chance when I was a young kid.”

Players and volunteers alike, including David and Teresa Hales, who assist with the club’s kit, reflect on this journey with pride and determination. They express excitement over the community’s support during this monumental occasion, stating, “For a little club like us, it’s absolutely amazing. I’m just so proud of everybody.”

As the Diamonds approach this historic match, all eyes will be on their potential to pull off an upset and continue the successful resurgence of a community united around their beloved team.
