Fermin Lopez Discusses Goalscoring Instincts and Praises Flick’s Impact on His Career

Fermin Lopez Marks 150th Barcelona Appearance Amid Impressive Career Growth

Fermin Lopez reached a significant milestone in his Barcelona career this week, as he made his 150th appearance for the club during the victory over Aston Villa. The 23-year-old midfielder, who rose through the ranks at La Masia, has established himself as a prominent figure in the team since joining the first squad for the 2023/24 season under coach Xavi Hernandez.

Over his 150 matches with Barcelona, Fermin has accumulated 38 goals and 35 assists, contributing to the team’s five trophy wins. His performance has notably elevated since Hansi Flick took over as coach, particularly in the area of goal-scoring, which has caught the attention of fans and analysts alike.

In an interview with Mundo Deportivo, Fermin expressed pride in his achievement, stating, “I don’t know, honestly I never imagined reaching 150 games with Barça’s first team, and I hope there will be many more.” He emphasized his desire to remain with the club for many more matches, underlining his happiness and pride in this milestone.

Fermin’s scoring frequency stands out as he averages a goal or an assist every 108 minutes, an impressive rate for a midfielder. He reflected on his innate ability to find goal-scoring opportunities, saying, “It’s something innate that I’ve always had.” He credits his progress over the last two years to improved performance on the pitch.

“My main strength is my direct style of play,” he explained. “I’ve had that characteristic and that mentality of always going forward, towards the goal.” Notably, his current season shows that he is scoring or assisting every 72 minutes on average.

Regarding his goal-scoring tally, which matches the legendary Diego Maradona’s record at Barcelona, Fermin remarked, “Well, in the end, they’re just numbers. I can’t compare myself to a player like Maradona, but I’m also very happy to have equaled his goal tally.”

While Fermin prefers to score goals, he acknowledged the value of assists, stating, “Providing assists also helps the team; you set up other teammates to score, and it gives you that satisfaction of creating opportunities for the team.”

Fermin’s development has continued under Hansi Flick, with the young player noting the maturity he has gained on the field. “Before, I was a bit too focused, sometimes rushing things, but with him… I think with Flick I’ve been able to acquire that maturity to read the game,” he said.

The intensity and passion in Fermin’s game align well with Flick’s playing style, although it raises concerns over potential injuries. He recognized this perspective, saying, “Better to have too much than too little… I try to control it, but my game is pure passion, and I try to give it my all.”
