Headline: Bayern Munich Coach Vincent Kompany Released from Hospital Following Health Scare
Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany has been released from the hospital and is reported to be “doing well” after collapsing at the club’s training facility. Kompany, 40, was taken to the hospital last Friday after feeling unwell while observing the training session of the club’s second team.
Medical evaluations have identified the cause of his illness as meningeal irritation, which is inflammation of the protective membrane surrounding the brain and spinal cord.
“Given the circumstances, he’s doing well,” stated Max Eberl, the club’s sports board member, during an interview with German broadcaster ARD on Wednesday. “He was discharged from the hospital today. That is the biggest and best news for all of us.”
While no specific timeline has been provided for Kompany’s return, Bayern officials indicated on Saturday that it would take “weeks, not days” for the former Manchester City defender to be back in his role on the sidelines.
In the meantime, English assistant coach Aaron Danks has stepped in, successfully leading the team to a 3-1 victory against Freiburg on Sunday.
Kompany had been dealing with a virus in the days leading up to his collapse and had missed several training sessions. He also skipped a press conference ahead of Bayern’s Champions League match against Arsenal last Tuesday but was back on the sidelines during the game on Wednesday.
“It’s a meningeal irritation that caused this incident on Friday. He will now rest and take medication,” Eberl noted before Bayern’s German Cup match against Magdeburg. “I am very confident that he will be back on the touchline, operating at 100% very soon.”
Bayern, the current league leaders, are set to face title contenders Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga on Saturday.
