Headline: Manchester City Advances to League Cup Quarter-Finals After Penalty Shoot-Out Success

Manchester City secured a spot in the quarter-finals of the League Cup, maintaining strong momentum under the management of Enzo Maresca. They overcame a resilient Brighton & Hove Albion side, showcasing an impressive display throughout the match.

Brighton took the lead on the half-hour mark with a goal from Malick Yalcouye, who capitalized on his team’s dominance. However, Mateo Kovacic equalized for Manchester City just five minutes before half-time, leveling the score.

After the break, Brighton quickly responded to a double substitution. Georginio Rutter restored their lead just two minutes into the second half. Despite several opportunities, including missed chances from Rutter, Brighton could not extend their lead.

City levelled the match again when Vitor Reis unintentionally redirected a Rayan Cherki free-kick past his goalkeeper Jason Steele, leading to a tense conclusion.

In the penalty shoot-out, Geronimo Rulli emerged as the hero for Manchester City, making two crucial saves to secure a 4-3 victory and guide his team into the next round.

Following this exciting encounter, the club confirmed a record attendance for any domestic cup match at the Etihad Stadium, with 55,343 fans in attendance. This record highlights the growing enthusiasm for the club and its performances.

Previously, Manchester City’s highest attendance for a domestic cup match at the Etihad was set during an FA Cup third-round match against Burnley in January 2018, when 53,356 spectators were present. The record for the League Cup was held by a fourth-round tie against Liverpool in December 2022, attended by 52,423 fans. The crowd from Wednesday night approached the club’s greatest-ever turnout for a League Cup match, which was 55,799 during a semi-final against Manchester United in December 1969.

Looking ahead, Manchester City will face League One side Bradford City in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup. The tie is scheduled for mid-December, following a Premier League home match against Chelsea on December 12 and preceded by a home game against Hull City on December 19.
