Manchester United Prioritise Midfield Overhaul with Tielemans and Santos Deals
Manchester United’s summer transfer window is finally showing clear purpose and logical planning. In a market often driven by noise and panic, recent developments at Old Trafford highlight a club addressing urgent needs. According to The Athletic, United are making decisive moves in midfield, with a deal for Youri Tielemans nearing completion and the arrival of Andrey Santos, moves that reflect both necessity and ambition.
The club has moved quickly to resolve a critical shortage in its squad. The report states: “Manchester United accelerated their midfield rebuild and are now set to finalise a deal for Youri Tielemans.”
Tielemans, available via a £35 million release clause, represents a strategic opportunity. United have “identified an opportunity to land the 29-year-old midfielder” and confirm that “he favours a move to Old Trafford.”
Midfield rebuild takes centre stage
The club acted after facing a severe lack of depth. The report notes: “Following the departure of Casemiro as a free agent and Manuel Ugarte’s serious knee injury, Kobbie Mainoo would have been their only senior, recognised and available central midfielder heading into the new campaign.”
Consequently, the club signed Santos from Chelsea in a deal “worth £48million, with a further £2m in add-ons” on a five-year contract. These additions support the tactical shift caused by “Bruno Fernandes’ redeployment as a No 10 under Michael Carrick.” With Fernandes pushing higher up the pitch, the midfield behind him requires greater security and progression.
Tielemans is expected to provide this stability, as he is “one of the Premier League’s best progressive passers, having led the division’s midfielders in lines broken per 100 pass attempts with 18.3.”
Youri Tielemans offers quality and control
Tielemans brings more than just statistics to the squad. The report notes: “His passing range is varied and can help open up defensive blocks, while defensively, the 29-year-old makes up for a lack of explosivity by picking his moments to win the ball back.”
While “the Belgium international’s injury record, he was troubled by calf, groin and ankle issues in his three seasons at Villa, will raise some concerns,” the £35 million fee is viewed as a balanced investment for a player of his experience.
Squad exits and left-wing question remain
United are also monitoring other areas of the pitch. The club “may still seek to strengthen the left-hand side of their attack, with Crysencio Summerville a leading target,” though this is contingent on player sales, as “Any move for a left-winger may hinge on the future of Marcus Rashford.”
Regarding Rashford, the report adds: “The 28-year-old is set to be reintegrated into first-team training after Barcelona decided against taking up their €30million (£25.6m) option to buy, although an exit before the close of the window is still possible.”
