Thibaut Courtois signs contract extension with Real Madrid
Real Madrid will retain Thibaut Courtois at the Santiago Bernabeu after the Belgium international agreed to a contract extension with the Spanish club.
Both parties have signed the agreement, which keeps Courtois at the club until June 2027, adding one year to his previous deal.
Reports suggest the deal has been ready since last summer, following Real Madrid’s standard policy of offering one-year extensions to players in their mid-thirties.
However, the La Liga club expects to restart negotiations with the veteran goalkeeper regarding a longer-term stay once this summer’s transfer window closes.
Courtois remains a key starter whenever he is fit and continues to perform as one of the world’s top goalkeepers, despite struggling with injuries over the last two seasons.
The 34-year-old suffered a recent fitness setback at the World Cup, sustaining a groin injury during Belgium’s quarter-final loss to Spain.
His exit from the match proved significant, as backup goalkeeper Senne Lammens could not stop Spain from advancing following a late mistake.
Real Madrid has maintained full confidence in Courtois despite these injury concerns.
Club officials still consider the Belgian their undisputed first-choice goalkeeper and a vital leader in the dressing room.
Since joining from Chelsea in 2018, Courtois has enjoyed one of the most successful phases of his career.
He has secured multiple La Liga titles, the Champions League, the Club World Cup, and various domestic trophies while playing in the Spanish capital.
The decision to extend his contract provides the club with clarity regarding their goalkeeping hierarchy for the upcoming campaign.
Andriy Lunin, the Ukraine international, will remain as the deputy to Courtois, competing for playing time in domestic cup competitions and during rotation periods.
Real Madrid is preparing for another challenging season under manager Jose Mourinho after a summer of major squad adjustments, with the club prioritizing stability in key positions.
Finalizing the future of Courtois reflects this strategy.
Although Real Madrid typically avoids long contracts for players over 35, the club believes the Belgian’s professionalism, experience, and performance levels justify an exception should he maintain his current form.
For now, the future of the experienced goalkeeper is secure, as he will stay at the Bernabeu until at least the summer of 2027, with more discussions regarding a longer stay expected later this year.
