Mbappe and Lamine Yamal set for World Cup semi-final showdown
The footballing world prepares for a highly anticipated clash as France and Spain renew their international rivalry in Dallas this Tuesday, with a spot in the World Cup final on the line.
The 2018 champions, France, aim for their third consecutive final appearance, while the 2010 winners, Spain, look to become only the fourth team to hold both the World Cup and European Championship titles simultaneously. While both rosters feature immense talent, all eyes remain on Kylian Mbappe and Lamine Yamal.
Mbappe’s rise to global stardom began at the 2018 World Cup, where his quickfire double against Lionel Messi’s Argentina signaled a changing of the guard. Now, eight years later, 19-year-old Lamine Yamal hopes to replicate that impact and ignite on the biggest stage following a quiet start to the tournament.
‘Mbappe will become the greatest player we’ve ever had’
Kylian Mbappe currently stands out as the world’s top performer. After netting 42 goals in 44 games for Real Madrid last season—finishing as the leading scorer in both La Liga and the Champions League—he has helped make France’s attack the most feared in the competition. The forward leads the Golden Boot race alongside Messi with eight goals in six games and has contributed to 11 goals in total.
With 19 World Cup goals, Mbappe sits just one behind Messi’s all-time record of 20, having already surpassed Miroslav Klose’s mark of 16. Although he has achieved success at the club level, he continues to hunt for a major trophy in Spain. Since becoming France’s all-time leading scorer this summer, he has reached 64 goals in 104 appearances.
“For me, it’s just ambition and confidence,” teammate Olivier Giroud told BBC Match of the Day. “He is a leader and you could see from a young age he was very at ease.”
While Mbappe remains focused on equaling Pele’s record of three World Cup titles, French football expert Julien Laurens believes the 27-year-old is destined to eclipse legends like Zinedine Zidane and Michel Platini. “I predict him to be the number one by the end of his career,” Laurens said. “He will probably become the greatest player we have ever had.”
‘The next 15 years belong to Lamine Yamal’
Lamine Yamal, who turned 19 on Monday, enters the match as the most promising young forward in football. After a standout 2023-24 season with Barcelona, he inspired Spain to glory at Euro 2024. Although a hamstring injury in April impacted his World Cup preparations, leaving him with one goal in five starts, his manager Luis de la Fuente remains confident.
“I ask him to be calm,” De la Fuente stated. “The big day for Lamine has yet to come at this World Cup.”
Due to fitness concerns surrounding the squad, Spain has shifted from a wing-heavy attack to a system prioritizing control. Spanish football journalist Ruairidh Barlow notes that while Lamine Yamal has faced more defensive pressure, he continues to provide the necessary moments of quality.
Former Barcelona manager Xavi, who handed the teenager his debut, believes his influence is growing. “He’s a leader on the pitch who makes the difference at a young age—something we’ve only seen with Lionel Messi, Diego Maradona, Pele and maybe Ronaldo,” Xavi wrote in The Athletic. “The next 15 to 20 years belong to Lamine, if he wants.”
Statistically, Mbappe holds the edge in goal scoring, converting 27% of his 30 shots compared to Lamine Yamal’s 4% conversion rate from 23 attempts. However, the Spanish winger leads in successful dribbles and defensive work, having made eight tackles compared to Mbappe’s one.
The two players have faced each other before, with Lamine Yamal scoring in Spain’s 2-1 victory over France in the Euro 2024 semi-finals. While Lamine Yamal has emerged victorious in eight of their 10 head-to-head meetings, Mbappe has been prolific, scoring nine goals across those matches. The winner of this semi-final is expected to lift the World Cup trophy in New Jersey on 19 July.
