Saliba Returns to Arsenal: Arteta Faces Defensive Dilemma

Headline: Arsenal Faces Defensive Dilemma with Saliba’s Return to Training

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta will soon encounter a significant defensive challenge, one that is likely to delight him and attract attention from rival clubs across Europe. William Saliba, a crucial player in the Gunners’ title triumph last season, has returned to training after being sidelined for the entire campaign with a back injury sustained during France’s World Cup semi-final loss to Spain.

The 25-year-old has established himself as one of the top defenders in the Premier League in recent seasons. However, his absence paved the way for summer signing Ezri Konsa to step up seamlessly as Arsenal climbed to the top of the league table. Since Konsa’s arrival from Aston Villa for £55 million, he has formed a strong partnership with Gabriel Magalhaes, contributing to Arsenal’s impressive defensive record, with the team conceding just five goals in nine games.

Saliba had been managing a back issue throughout the previous season and sought specialist advice after the World Cup, which revealed that while surgery was not required, a lengthy rehabilitation was necessary, and no set timeline was established for his return. Nonetheless, he has progressed from individual training at Arsenal’s facility to full training just in time for their upcoming Champions League clash with Slavia Prague and a busy festive fixture list.

The France international’s partnership with Gabriel was instrumental in Arsenal securing their first Premier League title in 22 years last season, helping the team concede only 27 league goals. Saliba’s exceptional performance earned him a spot in the PFA Team of the Year for the fourth consecutive time.

While Arsenal has maintained a cautious approach regarding Saliba’s recovery, his impending return promises to create difficult choices for Arteta’s defensive lineup.

Konsa’s Impressive Start

Initially, some questioned the necessity of signing Konsa, given Arsenal’s already strong defensive lineup. However, the England international has emerged as one of the club’s standout players this season, contributing to their position at the top of the Premier League. Some have suggested that Konsa and Gabriel have developed into one of the finest defensive partnerships in modern football.

Arsenal already boasted seven senior defenders when they acquired Konsa, who is part of an established defensive pairing with Saliba. In Saliba’s absence, Konsa has made seven starts in Premier League matches after joining just hours before the season opener. Arteta praised Konsa’s exceptional adaptation to the team, calling it “unbelievable.”

Konsa, who joined Arsenal following a successful tenure at Villa where he made 286 appearances and helped secure the Europa League title, has further solidified his position as a primary choice for the England national team.

He demonstrated his impact by scoring the first goal in Arsenal’s 2-0 victory over Everton and making significant contributions during the Gunners’ historic win at Anfield against Liverpool, their first in 14 years.

Arteta’s Tactical Decisions Ahead

As Arsenal prepares to face Hull on Saturday, the upcoming international break will provide Saliba with additional time to regain his fitness, positioning him for a return to regular play under Arteta. However, this return will force the manager to make tough decisions regarding his squad.

Ben White and Jurrien Timber have been the preferred right-backs this season, both having demonstrated their reliability despite previous injury concerns. Konsa, who can also play right-back—where he made his England debut—may shift to that position, allowing Saliba to slot back in alongside Gabriel.

Arteta values physicality in his defensive lineup, and positioning the imposing Konsa at right-back would present a formidable challenge for opposing forwards. Saliba’s comeback also reduces potential playing time for young center-back Cristhian Mosquera, whose limited minutes may raise questions about his future in the lineup.

Last season, Arsenal played a total of 63 matches across all competitions, clinching the league title and reaching the Champions League final. With ambitions to defend their league title and pursue European success this season, Arteta will have ample opportunity to rotate his considerable defensive options.
