When Bukayo Saka did not start in England’s semi-final match against Argentina, many speculated it was due to his ongoing Achilles issues. However, Thomas Tuchel has clarified that he chose Morgan Rogers over Saka based on a “feeling.”
Despite Saka’s impressive performance earlier in the tournament, where he scored a hat-trick against France in the third-place play-off, he did not play a single minute against Argentina. Saka expressed his desire for more playtime after that match, stating, “Of course, I would love to have played more. But of course, it’s not the time to talk about that now. I try to do my talking on the pitch. It’s done now. Move on.”
Saka confirmed he was fit, saying, “Yeah. I’m fit. I’m fit.”

Tuchel’s comments about Saka were surprising. He acknowledged Saka’s excellence, stating, “Bukayo is a key player for me. He was ready to go in the World Cup. I felt still the responsibility as a coach, and with the history given where he came from, to take it slow with Bukayo.”
He added, “I had a feeling after the Norway match that Morgan Rogers had something special to give to us with his physicality in the match against Argentina.”

Tuchel emphasized the intensity of the match, noting, “We had him [Saka] warm up several times against Argentina; we were ready to change, but the game became so crazy that in the end we opted for a different option.”
Despite his decision, Tuchel maintained that nothing has changed for him regarding Saka, calling him a “fantastic team-mate” and stating, “He’s excellent.”
This decision raised eyebrows, as Rogers, who had faced criticism earlier in the season, managed to create only modest impact, finishing the semi-final match with an assist and a modest rating of 6.8. On the other hand, Saka demonstrated his skills by playing 356 minutes throughout the tournament, scoring three goals and providing three assists, while Rogers recorded two assists in 337 minutes.
As the discussions continue, opinions diverge over the decision to prioritize Rogers over a fully fit Saka.
